They really don't. I've seen us play Palace at Selhurst Park twice and both times their fans were absolutely woeful. They only have a small part of the ground that actually sings and bring out drums, tifos etc. for televised games.

It's political. They spent a ridiculous amount on him because barca spent so much on neymar. Real Madrid want to show they are the biggest club in Spain and showing their financial firepower is one way of doing that. If barca hadn't bought neymar, real Madrid wouldnt have spent such a large amount on bale.

There is no such thing as 'big games' in the league. You win by consistency, not just beating big teams. You can have home wins against Man City, United, Spurs etc. all you want but if you are dropping points at Stoke, Palace and Fulham then you won't win the league. Its up to the team to perform on big European nights, not just one player. He shouldn't be expected to be the standout performer every European game, even though he was often one of our best players. Anyway, I've already pointed out, his performances in 'big games' are not just an anomaly.
