Eden Hazard has revealed that it was Didier Drogba who really convinced him to join Chelsea – NOT Roman Abramovich.

Hazard admits he was not sure in 2012 that a move from Lille to Stamford Bridge was the right one.

Hazard's former Lille manager Rudi Garcia has claimed in his autobiography that it took a personal plea from Abramovich over the phone – promising to triple Hazard’s pay – that sealed the deal.

But Hazard says that is not true – because Drogba was the man who talked him around.

Hazard said: “I didn’t want to go to Chelsea because I wanted to play the Champions League and they were sixth in the league.

“I was convinced when they won the Champions League in 2012.

“At the time, Roberto Di Matteo really wanted me, they had Juan Mata, and Oscar had been bought. I was told: ‘You’ll see, Chelsea will play football’.

“Gervinho called me and said: ‘Someone’s on the phone’. I didn’t know who it was but it was Drogba, he wanted me to sign.

“I was flattered, he was maybe the best striker in the world. In my head, I wasn’t going to sign, but in the end I was very pleased with my choice. I didn’t speak to Abramovich.

“I don’t know why coach Garcia wrote that in his book.”

Hazard added, in an interview with So Foot, that he has a great relationship with boss Jose Mourinho.

He said: “He’s normal, funny, says bull**** sometimes – but what he says will stay between us! He’s quiet. He gives an image of someone cold. But he’s very nice.

“He’s the one who gives me the most freedom, he understands how to get the best from his players. He knows which players need a word and who doesn't. The pressure is on him, so he lets the players be good on the pitch.”

He's been running on fumes in the past few weeks and it was probably his worst ever showing since joining us. That being said, considering he dragged us towards the title with the brilliant performances in the second half of the season when others were running out of steam, think we can close one eye and sweep this under the carpet.
