There were more games per season till 94-95, and money was far less common (Blackburn were the only side that comes to mind that spent big to win their only PL title), meaning smart transfers and good management played a big role. You have to remember Sir Alex made United competitive across three different decades, which is something that is clearly forgotten by many. Winning CL titles is a completely different ball game where luck plays a much bigger role. He came across arguably the best footballing side in two other finals, so his record isn't as bad as you make it seem.
