Marcelo also lost his job to Coentrao, Azpi played left back for defending purposes not attack.

Actually no he didn't. Marcelo played pretty much every game when fit, including the important games, but in Mourinho's last year at Real Madrid he was injured for much of the season. Either way, Coentrao is not exactly what you'd describe a defending full-back either and he was mostly deployed in pretty much the same role as Marcelo whenever he played.

Azpilicueta played as a defending full-back last season, that much is clear. However, I would assume that if Mourinho was fully satisfied with his performances there he would just continue with Azpilicueta and not spend a lot of money on a left-back who is known to be excellent both in defense and attack. When buying such a specialist for the position, the ideal thing would then be to actually play him in a role where we can get the most out of him on both ends of the pitch. If the plan was to keep playing a defending left-back who rarely goes forward, why would we not have just bought someone like Marcus Rojo who, like Ivanovic, is a CB by trade but can still play perfectly well as a defending left-back?

Go check out which games Coentrao played in. The big games, until he got injured, featured Coentrao....

A lost place is what happened to Ash last season his total numbers equal 1 full season and 8 games may lost his job was a poor phrase to use to try and prove your point about Luis

The season I'm speaking of specifically was 2011-2012 where Coentrao played in more of the Champs league games and also the clasico. I can't remember if Marcelo was injured though to be honest.

Pointless argument. Even if Mou loves his defensive fullbacks, at least one of them will be allowed to attack in the lesser games - which Ivanovic always did.

Not even an argument really. I just don't think we're gonna see much variation from what we've seen in the past, there may be more quality but nota complete abandonment from what Jose normally does.

Oh, you mean the season where Marcelo started 31 league games compared to Coentrao's 12. At least in one of the El Clasico's they both played, Marcelo at LB and Coentrao in midfield.

In the Champions League they pretty much shared the games. Don't remember either if one of them was injured for some of the games but at least in the knockout stages there looks to have been a trend of Coentrao starting the first leg and then Marcelo starting the decisive second leg. Happened each round against CSKA, APOEL and Bayern.

Discussion would have been a better word.

Bold part: This is the key thing though. If we play exactly the same but with Luis replacing Ivanovic as the more attacking fullback, then there's a better chance of breaking down a bus.

I can't argue something I'm not sure about makes no sense. Even still its clear Marcelo was in Jose's dog house, what do you think that was all about?

Nah... that usually happens if we haven't scored and we're searching for it. 70mins or so.

You guys are hoping Mourinho changes his stripes but he knows how to win and his methods don't variate all that much.

Think you're forgetting the fact that last season Ivanovic was constantly allowed to move forward and join the attack, even against the top teams.

It makes sense that Filipe Luis would take over that role on the opposite side and Azpi then coming in on the right and taking a similar (defensive) role as he did on the left last season.

We'll probably see Terry moving to the right CB position aswell so he can still get the extra protection from his closest fullback.

What do you mean by that?

Starting over 80% of the league games and playing full minutes in each of the decisive Champions League matches does not scream 'being in the dog house', at least not to me.

Coentrao was also injured. What I'm saying is Marcelo and Jose obviously didn't see eye to eye but for lack of an alternative Marcelo was played. Are you really contesting that the two of them didn't get along?

Moot point anyway, if your only example of Jose not preferring his FB's to stay home is Marcelo its not exactly the most compelling argument. Having said that when you look at Luis you will see precisely what Jose wants in a FB, ball winning ability. If he gets forward it will be on a need basis and for the most part its not a need, we play counter attack against bigger teams and in most of the small games we were able to get the result with our front 4 plus one Mid.

All I can tell you guys is based on what I've been told by Nick Dasovic and what I saw in one of Jose's dossier(He has one for every player in the XI but it highlights the tactical deployment of every player on the pitch) FB's don't bomb on at will unless the need is there. 20mins left in a game with no real incision.

We will see more quality because Brana wasn't the best attacker, but the deployment won't change all that much.

Azpi was moved to the LB position because he provided better coverage for Hazard than the now slow footed Ashley Cole. He will now go back to his natural position and with Luis will provide us with two ball winning FB's who win the ball in excellent areas to initiate counter attacks.

We will see... I have a feeling you guys are gonna be disappointed if you think this acquisition will lead to more help for Hazard going forward.

I disagree. I think for the majority of times (against inferior teams which we'll face more often than not) they'll support our attackers to build play, and not only provide a solid platform.

I'm very certain our fullbacks will be more involved in general play next season. Mou will not be as conservative next season as he was in the last.

Damn straight. Probably one of the reasons we weren't able to break down tight defences was the lack of involvement of our FB. Pretty sure Jose spent big money on him to address that issue.

Don't really get why you think that. Why else would we have bought Filipe Luis ? If Mourinho was happy with the way it was don't you think he would have just kept Azpi and Ivanovic as his first choice fullbacks ?

The fact that he bought Filipe Luis seems to be a clear indication (to me atleast) that he wants something different from that left back position then what he got from Azpi.

He wasn't happy with playing Azpi out of position that was out of necessity... What he wants is balance down both flanks. With Luis and Azpi you get similar characteristics and the ability to win the ball in excellent areas to counter attack.

I could be wrong, not professing to be a know it all I just think Jose is the type of manager who thinks about building stability from the back to build attacks. Luis provides that and also has the ability to get forward if the need presents itself.
