Fernando Torres

Not the wages but the transfer fee which is amortized on FFP. When he was on loan he was still technically our player even if he won't play another game for us, so the remaining fee was divided between this year's and next year's books. Now, it'll all count in this year's balance on FFP.

I wonder if it's reasonable for us to speculate that the club must have negotiated some sort of compensation for this? Reading between the lines of some authoritative sounding news items, it seems Milan were paying €3.1m of Torres's annual salary, with Chelsea obviously picking up the rest. Maybe Torres has agreed to wave at least a part of what he's owed by Chelsea in order to make this deal happen. If so that would be our payback for agreeing to take an £18.2m hit in this season's FFP numbers rather than £9.1m this season and £9.1m next.

It doesn't really matter much either way since we would have had to pay the full amount eventually but I'm sure there was a point in the negotiations when Marina looked across the table and asked, "What's in it for us if we sign off on this deal?" Hopefully the answer was a million or two off the total bill.

The club has really not let much slip out in this one. Even the figures of how much we and Milan were paying of his wages were contradictory from one source to another and some were even saying that Milan were paying all of his wages (Telegraph, IIRC).

Obviously now we have all of his wages off of the balance sheet because he is a Milan player on loan at Atleti. I suspect he did take a wage cut to go back there, because I can't see Atleti paying him 10m/yr nor can I see Milan still paying some of his current wages while he is in Spain because that would be terrible deal from their perspective.

Indeed the source I'm recollecting did say that Milan were paying Torres's wages of €3.1m pa, implying that this represented his total salary. Obviously all of us here know better, so I just speculated that the quoted figure was in fact Milan's share of Nando's base salary.

As for the wages being completely off the books, I'd be quite surprised if that was so. It's common practice for clubs to offer a pay-off when they want to move players on. Those negotiations would usually start with the player asking for the full balance due on his contract, plus an amount to cover projected bonuses. The fact that Torres seems to want to go home will have given Chelsea some good cards to play in those discussions so I'm sure we will have negotiated a discount on that figure. I can't believe we'd have got away scot free however.

Any amount we did agree to pay Torres would still count against FFP.

That raises another question, did we terminate his contract or was he sold for a zero fee to Milan? If it's the first then he probably did get some sort of pay off, but even that I would imagine would be different from wages in FFP, but are obviously still expenses that count in the balance.

If it's the latter, then I don't think we'd still be paying him anything because I doubt that a player can still be receiving wages from his previous club when he is no longer affiliated with it in any manner.

I can handle shitty players but I cannot handle shitty players with an entitlement problem and this makes him the only Chelsea player I absolutely cannot even remotely begin to like, let alone respect (Bogarde was before my time). So good riddance and thanks for nothing.

Bogarde was a joke but at least we got him on a free ,,, agree with your feelings about Torres ,,, He was only EVER concerned

about HIMSELF

If I remember rightly Bogarde atleast had the self respect to carry on training and keep himself in a decent shape for Ranieri to have a u turn if he ever choose to.

If Torres was ever put in the same situation it would surprise me if he even did that given his attitude with us.
