A good preview of the draw by Dan Levene:

Champions League draw preview: Chelsea's record against all 23 possible opponents.

Of seven possible sides in pot two (Man City are not an option), Blues know three well.

The have been drawn with Valencia three times: six matches, and never a defeat to the third team in Spain.

Current Portuguese runners-up Benfica proved no real obstacle in last season's quarter finals: Blues won both legs.

And Schalke, third in Germany, were in Chelsea's group in 2007/08: Blues won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge; drawing 0-0 in Gensenkirchen. Their AufSchalke Arena was also venue for Chelsea's 2003-04 group meeting with Besiktas: a 0-2 win for Blues. The match had been moved from Istanbul for security reasons.

Ukranian champions Shakhtar Donetsk and runners-up Dynamo Kiev would both be new opposition.

And the same is true of Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg, and Portugal's third team Braga.

There are many familiar sides in pot three.

Chelsea knocked out Olympiakos in the 2007-08 second round.

The following season they met now-Italian-champions Juventus at that stage: again victoriously.

They were paired with Spartak Moscow in their 2010-11 group, and recorded two straightforward wins. The Russian runners-up's Luzhniki stadium is also where Chelsea met Manchester United in the 2008 final.

Chelsea had two group wins over Belgian champions Anderlecht in 2005-06; and remain undefeated against French runners-up PSG, having met them at that stage the previous year.

Turkish champions Galatasaray featured in Chelsea's group in 1999-2000: with two wins for the Blues, including 0-5 in the famous 'Welcome to hell... bothered?' match in Istanbul.

Dutch champions Ajax are probably the best-known European side Chelsea are yet to face.

Lille is also uncharted territory for the Blues.

Pot four is the usual mix of wild-cards, with few familiar faces.

Romanian champions Cluj were surprise qualifiers in 2008-09, and held Chelsea to a draw at the Constantin Radulescu Stadium. Blues won the return.

French champions Montpellier would be new opposition, as would Belarus title-holders BATE Borisov.

Borussia Dortmund, another side Chelsea have never faced, are present German champions: and by far the toughest team in pot four.

Croatian champs Dynamo Zagreb, and fourth Spanish side Malaga would be new.

Blues have never faced Celtic in a competitive match, though an ill-advised 'friendly' some years back was better remembered for events off the field than on it.

And Danish league-winners Nordsjaelland, the lowest ranked team to qualify, are new to practically everybody
