Ryan Fong 2,776
The one thing I worry about with a Mata-Hazard-Hulk/Marin front trio is that it will make it virtually impossible for us to shit our way through games like we did in the CL this year. I don't think the trio have the firepower between them to win games consistently and repeatedly for us (I'm of the opinion that they will produce consistently good performances but only turnout match winning performances every month or so). We're not Barcelona or Real Madrid, we can't outscore every team out there.Defensive wise I don't think Hulk is a too much downgrade compares to Kalou. He has played as RB for a fair amount of time after all. And yes Malouda probably defences better than Hazard/Marin but the number of times of him giving away possession was ridiculous. I am sure Hazard/Marin are able to keep possession much better therefore less defensive pressure on our left side.
Ryan Fong 2,776
And btw the biggest downgrade of our defence is the missing of Drogba. His defensive headers in set piece were just unreal, probably the best in the world including natural defenders. This is probably the reason why I want us to sign Fellaini. We can still get away with Malouda or Bertrand at left wing and Ramires at right wing but Drogba was so crucial every time we played a match defensively. I guess we have to groom Lukaku for that role now- but unlike Drogba he doesn't have that incredible mix of ball control, strength and aerial ability. Spike 12,049
Anyone knows if Navas (lost his homesickness?) or Cazorla are available? Navas homesickness has gotten a lot better but not enough to warrant a move to a new country.
Randall 315
I really think this deal might be off, since the last official news we've bid for Moses & Schurrle and then we apparently have bid for Oscar too? Are they really going to come to be bench warmers?

CRonaldo 55
Yeah, this possible transfer is not moving enough. It would be great for Chelsea, but I'm not sure anymore he will come to the Blues.
cantkeepmedown 57
Imagine if we had him tearing down that right wing. He's available for free if we can beat Barcelona to him.

Strike 7,491
Excuse me if I'm harsh but it's really a stupid remark. Mikel has the best passing game of the squad, arguably the best ball protection as well. People should look what kind of passes he receives, where, from who and where and what he manages to produce. He receives cinderblocks in an over exposed zone, back to goal (players pressing him from elsewhere from behind) ; from the two center backs who are often covering the full backs. The time needed for the pass from the CB to come to Mikel is even more important as the 3 players are really far away from each other. Because the basics of the pressing are precisely to come out during the passing sequence, when the ball is moving. Though Mikel manages to give very good passes after. That's not luck or something cheeky. Do you see Swansea's full backs high on the pitch ? No, Caulker, Williams and Rangel (sometimes Taylor goes upfront) are the 3 close passing opportunities offered to Leon Britton who always plays short and behind. Mikel hasn't those, he's often to turnover before giving the ball to Lamps or one of the full backsyes. agreed. i merely said he is no "Pirlo" to expose the opposition defence. he is rather a middle man to dig us out of trouble. my only criticism of mikel is that he should propel the attack forward more. he seems to take the safer option more than the other midfielders. lampard and mata are quite ambitious with their passing,
Joelasticot 111
Besides, the whole team knows mikel plays those balls. I bet whenever he gets the ball everyone goes «ok mikel is gonna give it back so I know when to time my run or that I have to look for a good pass etc..» Such plays that may seem boring to any observer are actually key to building collective effectiveness over time as they act as reference points for the whole team.I'm Sure everyone agrees timing is key in football and such plays allow players to consistently hit those decisive timings..I always thought mikel was great. BlueLyon 9,359
Is there smallest chance for us to get Hulk AND Modric/Witsel/Martinez if we sell Essien, Meireles, Malouda?I have feeling that in the end, all biggest transfers will cost us too much, we will miss class cheaper players and overpay for some medium 28yrs old player on deadline day...We are looking after Modric (probably wont be available for us), Moses, Hulk (Porto wants more), Schurrle (already refused) and thats it. We are not seriously interested in any other midfielder or winger...I think we should look after alternatives, because it wont happen what board is waiting for; miracle that Porto will accept smaller fee and Spurs will sell their best player to rival... Strike 7,491
Ambitious passing means waste, it's as simple as that. In a sharing role approach, you cannot ask your deep player to create from the deep. At the end of the day if Britton has that simple passing, it allows Sigurdsson and Allen to be that brilliant because they haven't to matter about if Britton loses the ballIf you compare the income of two players freed from their defensive duties (don't meaning they're lazy defensively, they help as well) and one player with a restricted passing game ; it will be better than 3 players who tries to create. It will bring a lot of waste from the deep player and wasted opportunities in the play, tougher counter attacks to face etc..time to take this conversation away from the Hulk thread. watch out for my reply in the pre-season thread since i cant find an appropriate thread for this

LondonPride1905 236
Having us in for Oscar makes me totally wanna leave Porto. I want Hulk more than Oscar, Moses and Modric together, but Porto's way of squeezing every cent makes me wanna go nuts. Look at Internacional. We talked to them, they said 16 - 20mil. pounds that they want. We accept. That's how it's done, not twist arms like Porto. If we get him for 30 - 38 mil. ok, anything more for me is over the top.
