The Roberto Di Matteo Thread

RDM was never the man for this job. If he hadn't of won the CL then he would be looking through the local messenger for a new job. He's only here because Pep said no to Roman, as soon as Pep's ready he will be taking the most ruthless job in club football. Got to feel for Robbie because he is such a classy and nice guy but when it comes to managing against the big clubs he just doesn't know how to dominate them and before anyone says 'he achieved a CL and FA.Cup last season' let's not forget the incredibly large amount of luck we got on the way to winning those trophies and the style of football we played. Whatever happens Roman want's exciting, attacking football which is clearly what RDM is trying to achieve but can RDM achieve the balance!? I'm not convinced!

I don't think Di Matteo is the right man for the job, I never did.

In my opinion his tactics have been good up until this game. However the board clearly did not see him as first choice given how long they took to appoint him. I hope he succeeds as he has done well for the club as a player and manager. Today was exceptionally bad, but you can't blame RDM for a poor team performance, however he did little to effect the game and i don't understand why he only brought sturidge on with 5mins to go; if you need a goal put your strikers on.

People going over board, after a milk cup lose.....

Nothing to see here, move a long.

Im not bothered by the defeat but by the manner of the defeat. However ever year a team will suffer a bad defeat, hopefully this is our only one and if so I'm glad it came in what is basically a pointless game.

RDM got his tactics wrong today, but if you consider that he is still learning as a manager perhaps this will help him to improve. Having said that, I don't know if I am happy having a manager who is developing at the club, although if you consider SAF won nothing in his first year at united and many wanted him sacked and look at him now. Perhaps keeping RDM in the job will improve our consistency and we can build a legacy like that at united. We've got the resources to do so, but this constant changing is effecting the club. Added to this RDM has won his first three BPL games, so we shouldn't be so quick to judge him.

My god guys

I knew this backlash would come eventually, didn't think it'd be this quick in such an irrelevant game..

To be honest LDN this isn't a backlash from one game. A lot of fans i sit in the stands with and travel with to games have been doubting the decision to keep RDM on this season from the very moment he penned the contract. I said from the start that we are forever indebted to Robbie for bringing us that holy grail but I don't think he is the man to bring us sexy, attacking football that can challange for the major trophies. I'm going to stick by my guns and pray to God that he proves me wrong because he is too fucking cool for school and i DO want him to succeed here!

That's considering it's even possible to play Roman's idea of sexy football and win. I think this is all a waste of time and money. Winnings is what matters. Winning is sexy. (Was anyone ever bored when we were winning under Mourinho and Ancelotti? Were you bored when we won the CL last year?)

wtf?

Yes, Mourinhos side was really, really boring.

Ancelottis team scored more than 100 goals in a single season, a 5-0 or 8-0 matches were not just a dream in 2010/2011 season. That team was sexy, and was a winning team.

yeah.. under Mourinho we were a compact team with duff, robben, lamps and didier wreaking havoc upfront. under ance, we were a powerful team with malouda, anelka, lamps and didier but i don't think we ever played "sexy" football. our attacks were incisive. RDM has got the players he wants now and I can see us being as good as 06 or 10 with or without playing flamboyant passing style

I wasn't bored for one second last year with all the dramatics of AVB coming and going thus leaving the door wide open for RDM to form a spirited charge to the Champions League trophy. It's not how we win that bothers me or other fans because in the end of the day when all has been said and done like you said, winning is all that matters. Who it does seem to bother though is the man who has given us these glamorous years with such enormous investment and it would be preposterous for any Chelsea fan to question Romans motives. If Roman want's sexy football, then that is what the man wants, weather it can be done or not. There is no denying that he has quite publicly stated his desires and RDM will have to come up with the goods or he will be out. It's early doors and there is time for him to prove that he can transform this club into a fluid, attacking force but let's not forget how ruthless Roman is. Tempus Fugit.... And it most certainly will for RDM if he doesn't get it right.

depends on the definition of sexy. assuming sexy football meaning a high tempo passing style game, i don't think so. ance's team had a powerful attack but were by no means playing flamboyant one-touch football. it was the directness of our attacks and the sheer power of the front three along with lampard's late runs that won us the title

What Roman wants is "entertaining football" according to newspapers, I've been reading this since Mourinhos days. The talk is he likes offensive football. This is the first time I read that Roman wants a "high tempo passing style game". It seems we have Romans close advisors here.

I don't know how much of the blame can be put on Robbie. With essentially the 4231, our back five have been completely static and our front three are completely dependent on one or two players having excellent games. If they all have shit games, like what happened today, the system completely falls apart and no amount of tactical genius can rectify that.

I'm mainly just pissed at how falcao whipped us with his dick, not really the tactical shortcoming of our coach... who by the way pioneered one of the greatest cup runs in club history.

then yeah.. its true we were playing to Roman's standards in 2010 but i assumed sexy football meaning the one-touch passing thing they play

We only scored 100 because everyone was in top finishing form. Drogba, Malouda, Anelka, Lampard, even Kalou, were all tucking away pretty much every chance we got (aside from the FA Cup final where all of those players decided it would be fun to act like Mario Gomez for a game). It wasn't because we were playing any better attacking football, it came down to individual excellence, which has been lacking ever since then.
