ulsterchelsea 3,221
Why is this so hard to understand? The coach picked two penalty takers for the game. Neither of them were Torres. It just so happened that one of them missed. Torres isn't the best of penalty takers and he hasn't taken them for a very long time. The best penalty kickers should take them for the team. PKs are precious, they're not to be arbitrarily bandied about. I'm not saying media criticism should affect what Torres does on the pitch. I'm saying whatever he does, there will be criticism of outlandish proportions. It's really damned he does, damned if he doesn't. If he missed the PK instead of Luiz, you don't think there would be moans about how Chelsea allowed a rusty (in terms of PKs) striker take the kick? Followed by stories about kow-towing to his ego, helping and failing miserably to buffer his fragile confidence, etc. There was a story in the Daily Fail about how Chelsea were going out of their way to coddle their Spanish superstar by letting him sit next to Juan Mata in the dressing room. This was for the simple matter of Torres having his locker next to Mata's. This was a "newsworthy" story. I personally couldn't give a Fuck what the daily mail say and I never found it difficult to understand (whatever you meant with that) the point I'm making is that players change their minds on the pitch and allow others to try their luck for whatever reason (maka v charlton) and other players step up, can't see why he wouldnt want it.....don't understand what's so difficult to understand
BlueLion. 21,491
Well... that's two out of three missed by Mata. I would quite like to see Sturridge take them.

capriccioso 2,545
JT. I think he can be a good taker, given practice. His penalty at Moscow was near perfect, he sent van der Sar the wrong way. And I'm not taking the piss here.
Waterfall 893
It's not just the penalties for Mata. He's been WAAAAY off in his FK and corner delivery - too short every single time

capriccioso 2,545
No one beats the Germans at taking penalties. IIRC Podolski's miss in South Africa was the first miss in either general play or a shootout in 28 years by the German NT.
zolayes 14,489
Sinclair is still perfect I think and very high pressure
capriccioso 2,545
Perhaps we should sign a German just to take penalties.
manpe 10,861
We don't have any good penalty takers in the squad. Lampard's missed far too many lately and so has Mata, haven't seen others taking them often enough, so can't decide. Yeah, we should probably sign a German.. and I'm not joking, penalties are too important to fuck up so easily. But when he's playing - Drogba
capriccioso 2,545
Drogba's not a natural penalty taker and he messed up his last penalty.
manpe 10,861
Drogba's not a natural penalty taker and he messed up his last penalty.Who hasn't messed up a penalty at Chelsea? We have no good choices. He has a good shot and mental strength - the main attributes that made Lamps a great penalty taker.
Spike 12,049
You asked for a German?
Madmax 9,219
What's Torres even doing on that poll? Luiz/Drogba.
BleedsBlue 1,549
Petr Cech,so then he will have more goals than Torres
gary gordon 1,777
If Kalou is on i reckon he should. Puts them in the roof of the net. Sturridge should probably have a go..
Fulham Broadway 17,453
Should be set in stone. A takes them. If A isnt available then B and so on. Not some random ''No its my turn'' on the night.
LDN Blue 7,903
You can't 'suggest' penalty takers. The taker must be 100% confident to do so, ideally they shouldn't be selected out of a pool the manager should ask (one-on-one) if said person wants that role.Torres was well within his rights to say 'no', if Mata was not confident it should've been given to the next assigned person. Fulham Broadway 17,453
There should be weekly practice and 'exams'. List is subsequently updated. We've been shit at penalty shoot outs since 1754
