I can't help not see the similarities between him and Joey Barton: CM good going forward, has excellent technique in long range shooting and will always get in a fight when in doubt.

I like Barton, but the where he was the best was right midfield. Meireles is really incredibly complete and has a better way of regulate the play, a better short pass ability and a better occupation of space, best moves etc...

Meireles really allows this alternation between short and long play, and he defends like he goes forward and he is better in a central position than Barton

On reasons for the move :
