I thought he was going to bomb in Serie A so fair play to him for going there and ressurecting his career a bit. Martinez brings to the table the qualities he doesn't have and their partnership works well due to it.

Still delighted he never returned here though.

Wonder how things would have panned out though had we signed him instead of Morata in 2017.

He would have likely scored more goals but still held us back and as soon as Sarri came in he would have been firmly on borrowed time.

Perhaps but if we had backed Conte a little more that season, things might have turned out differently and he may well have stayed on.

Conte has many strengths as a manager but the market isn't one of them, the fact he actually brought Alexis to Inter despite his clear decline to a lower league standard player for a whole two years prior says it all, "backing him properly" would have likely lead to us being the one's stuck with him.

As far as not giving Conte further reign on transfers go, that's up there with the near catastrophic fuck up of replacing Drogba with Adriano in the thank fuck that didn't happen stakes.

Just depends how you look at it with Sanchez, he started okay for Inter, fitness stopped him playing more then he got some involvement before picking up a suspension and injury. I think hes maybe got 150 minutes for them since going there and has been involved in 2 goals.

Its not exactly the most to back the move up but I do think Conte probably got the same judgement when he signed Tevez from Man City. Although it was different reasons that Tevez was available, still look how that panned out for Conte and Juve. Like Tevez for Juve, Sanchez was a huge risk for Inter. It hasnt paid off yet but its not exactly fair to say its backfired because the guys hardly had a chance to show what he can do. I mean even look at Lukaku, that move has paid off despite the fact United and their fans couldnt wait to see the back of him.

I think if he was backed here and got the likes of Alex Sandro, Kyle Walker, Rom Lukaku... he might still been here to this day or have faired better in his 2nd season. Maybe not though because we did clutter the squad with shite such as Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Zappacosta, Morata etc but I dont think its as open and closed as he cant be trusted in the market. I dont think he was solely responsible for Bakayoko or Drinkwater despite him saying he wanted them because months later he said he doesnt have much say on signings and that the board did. He also wanted to keep Matic. So there definitely was something conflicting there. Why would he of wanted to keep Matic if he has just signed 2 MF players he wanted?

Conte played games with the club in the second season to the point he practically threw away the Man City game, absolutely no way would he have given Bakayoko and Morata the chances they got if they weren't his signings. If they were forced on him he would have played Hazard as false 9 and Christensen/Luiz as CDM to "send a message".

Even if Alexis started okay for his standards to even be interested after his level at United was diabolical. Another example is Naingolan, a player he was allegedly angry we couldn't get over the line he ditches the minute he actually gets to coach him.

Yes we probably would have done better if we got all his first choice targets but that's like saying Fergie would have won even more titles and CLs if he got Maldini and Ronaldinho when he tried, it's very rare for a club to pull off every single number one target (especially when you're fighting or trying to get them off more financial able clubs and more appealing managers like we were) and if Baka was his way of improvising then.....

Just to add a bit of further context to my point, Inter are apparently very close to signing Ashley Young

That is madness because you see Inter being linked with Vidal, Eriksen and Giroud who are a much higher quality of player than Young. Surprised Moses hasnt been talked about either then. Maybe Conte wants to recreate the Man United team with Sanchez, Young and Lukaku.

Conte is as short term as Mourinho

I'm sure Conte would have done a better job at Utd with that sort of budget.

It would have just delayed the inevitable. Conte can't keep quiet when things aren't going his way.

To muddy the waters even more, I've seen a few times on Twitter tonight that apparently Conte wanted him at Chelsea and we approached United on deadline day in the summer of 2017 before we went in for Zappacosta.

There are no words...
