STATEMENT BY CPO CHAIRMAN, STEVE FRANKHAM - 27/4/12

Directors of Chelsea Pitch Owners this week (Monday 23 April) attended a meeting with councillors of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (LBHF) and planning officers.

The LBHF reiterated their position - laid out in a statement from them on 9 March - that they would like Chelsea FC to stay at Stamford Bridge.

They also explained they would be happy to assist the club further in exploring ways to expand the stadium's capacity, and that it remains their belief this can be done, although not without difficulty.

The club has put an immense amount of time and money into exploring how to expand Stamford Bridge and believes there are serious planning difficulties and, in any event, it is not financially viable.

It is the CPO board's intention to continue dialogue with both parties in the hope of producing more clarity on these crucial issues.

Steve Frankham.

Chairman

Hi,

i am a Chelsea fan from India .I would like to know about the where we stand in extending the Bridge or moving to a new stadium. What will be our new capacity if we extend the stadium or move to a new stadium.

Why are CPO against moving from the stadium.I heard there was a vote in CPO last october about selling the shares to Chelsea and it needed 75% to go through but only 61.5% voted in favour?

If cfc move to a new site where will it be most probably?

Not many seats could be added if we expand Stamford Bridge. The expansion would probably involve adding 5000 or so seats to the Matthew Harding stand, bringing the capacity to roughly 47,000. The Shed End would be the other stand which it would be viable to expand but again not many seats could be added because there are not enough exits and there are houses behind it. That would probably be about 5000 maximum again so we would have 52,000. As for the East and West stands, it is more or less impossible to expand them, even by knocking them down and starting again. The club has calculated that it is not financially viable to expand Stamford Bridge and reasonably it is not possible.

For a potential new stadium, 55,000 seems to be the figure thrown around and at the moment it would better suit our fan base size. However, it would probably be built so that we could expand it in the future if we needed to. The new stadium looks as if it could be in Battersea, although Nine Elms and Earls Court are other sites that have been considered. The club has not spoken much about a new stadium though. Battersea has a very large site for a stadium though and regeneration of the area would come with a new stadium. I think that in the near future the CPO will vote in favour of selling Stamford Bridge to the club though because the first vote (when there were only 61% of votes) was at a time when the club had not spoken about the viability of expanding Stamford Bridge and gave no information about a new stadium to the CPO. Therefore, the CPO were not happy to sell Stamford Bridge because they did not know where, when or to what they would be moving to. They now know that moving is probably the better option. As more information is possibly given, the chance of more than 61% voting in favour of selling will most likely increase.

What would be the cost of rebuilding the SB and what would be cost of building a new stadium??

If we do build a new stadium we will sell land in SB that must give us a hefty amount to build the new stadium if I am not wrong....

This is from the club and is about the viability of expanding Stamford Bridge

BATTERSEA BID ANNOUNCED

Posted on: Fri 04 May 2012

Chelsea Football Club can confirm to our fans that we have today submitted an offer, with our property development partner Almacantar, to acquire the 39-acre Battersea Power Station site.

Battersea Power Station is one of London's most famous buildings and has the potential to become one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world.

Our joint bid was submitted in accordance with the sales process established by the Joint Administrators for the site. The process could run for a number of months.

We are not the only interested parties and there is no certainty that we will be successful. We also appreciate that we have many significant hurdles to address if we are to build a new stadium on the site, including winning the support of our fans, the CPO shareholders and local Wandsworth residents, as well as securing the approval of Wandsworth Council, the Greater London Authority and heritage authorities. We must also stress that making an offer for the Battersea Power Station site does not mean the club has made a definitive decision to leave Stamford Bridge.

Working with architects and planning experts we have developed a plan to preserve all the significant aspects of Battersea Power Station. The four iconic chimneys and wash towers along with the Grade II* listed west turbine hall and control room will be restored and retained in their original locations and provide a unique architectural backdrop to a world-class stadium with a capacity of around 60,000 seats.

Following feedback from fans, our initial plans include a 15,000-all seated one-tier stand behind the south goal, likely to be the biggest one-tier stand in football. Also as suggested by many fans, the stadium proposed is rectangular in shape with four separate stands. The design includes a bigger family area and more room for disabled supporters.

As well as a new home for our club, the development would include a town centre with substantial street-level retail shops, affordable housing and offices - all of which would benefit Wandsworth and bring a significant number of permanent jobs to the area. We would also make a significant contribution towards the Northern Line Extension, a new high-volume transport link proposed for the area.

We will keep our fans updated as the process develops.
