ZanSnake 1,211
I disagree, due to the simple fact that no-one can be the greatest player 'in the world'. On the basis that one player would have to play in a league with every football playing nation in the world, and exceel. He had a tremendous talent, 100% certain, and he was a great player in his home country with defenders of the same origin or playing the same kind of game. Whose to say that one player can go to another league and exceel in the same manner? The image of Shevchenko's tenure at Stamford Bridge comes to mind. He has a distinction as of one of the best and talented players to have emerged onto the international scene and in Brazilian football, and with a gobsmacking record - but not the greastest of all time or in the world, any whose to say there isn't another player that will meet and excell Pele's achievements in the up-coming decades? Randall 315
This guy needs to be a little quieter I think, just because he was a great player doesn't give him free reign to comment on fucking EVERYTHING. Like when he told Neymar to stay in Brazil? Shut up you muppet.
eldo 868
I think that's a bit far, eldo Pele was, and remains, one of the greatest footballers of all-time, alongside Maradona and Eusebio.Pele and Eusebio played 50 years ago. Pele had his time and his generation. Football has evolved since he stopped playing. Of all time? How is he the best footballer of 1990s and 2000s?He said that players just perform for two years. What was then Lampard doing for the past 7 years? Of course there are many other players, Frank was just an example.

Henrique 9,133
Some people would call me idiot and that kind of thing. But brazilian football of the past was way better, way better than football played in England in same period.Premier League is now great because of the foreign players and managers. Now brazilian league is not that good, but still better than most part of european leagues.Sure now football in countries like England, Spain and Italy is the better in the world, because they buy the good players from every country around the world.Pelé is stupid. People laugh at him in Brazil because of the stupid things he say, but theres one player in the world You can even compare with him, and its Maradona.Only someone who posses no knowledge in football at all would say he is not great because he did not played in Europe football of the 50s or 60s is the same time. He is the legend of his time. He can't be the best player of todays. Why should players of 90s and those who play today be forgotten because of this old man? Maradonna praised Messi, Pele is just bitter.
BlueLion. 21,491
For the record, I think Eusebio was better than Pele. And Maradonna Although its hard to say because I've never watched any of them play.

Puskas, De stafano (though he is argie) , Zento, George Best, Stanley Matthews are few of them. And as far as english football was concerned it should not be forgotten that the concept of European Cup was sparked by a series of friendlies played by Wolves against various foriegn clubs. Henrique 9,133
Brazil managed to win 3 WC between 1958 and 1970, and all players played in Brazil.England won in 1966 with the help of the referee and with an ugly football. I respect english football, but England before the the foreign invasion never had the highest standarts in football in last 50 years.Sorry If I hurt the feellings of some brothers, bu Thats the true. Madmax 9,219
But does Pele think someone, some time, now or in the past has taken his place as the No 1? That is the question ESPNsoccernet asked him."I think another Pele is a little difficult because my mother and father closed the machine," he replied. "There are always excellent players. Maybe one day there will be some player who will play more games than Pele did, or score more goals than Pele did. But I think that is a little difficult."Pele declared Messi as the current generation's best player, although he feels Neymar, from his own club Santos, will shortly surpass the Barcelona great. The great man gave ESPNsoccernet his personal list all-time greats: "Beckenbaurer, Georgie Best, more recently Zico, and Maradona, well, he was a good player, then we have Platini, and of course Di Stefano. Zidane was for a long time the best player in the world. Sometimes you need luck, to stay clear of injuries. There is also a problem comparing players, such as Garrincha and Zico. Today there is no doubt Messi is the best player, maybe Neymar will be."He also revealed his admiration for Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard but is at a loss as to why the England team have fallen short of its potential and its players have not risen to the ranks of the worlds elite, but instead lie just a tier below. When asked by Rio Ferdinand about his toughest opponent, Pele replied: "Bobby Moore, and Beckenbauer. Moore because he was always the hardest to play against."Pele was also asked who would be his dream strike partner, and he went for Neymar ahead of Messi.
