"Chelsea's annual wage bill has soared to £172.5 million - almost £40 million more than the next highest payers Manchester City.

The figure for the year ending June 2010 is revealed in Chelsea's full annual accounts lodged with Companies House on Friday and shows a significant increase on the previous year.

In 2009, the club spent £165.6 million on wages but that sum included pay-offs worth £12.6 million to sacked manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and his assistants. Excluding the pay-offs, the rise in wages is £19.5 million and represents a 12.7% increase.

Manchester City's wage bill is £133.3 million, Manchester United's £131.7 million and Arsenal are fourth with £110 million spent annually on salaries, according to their most recent accounts.

Chelsea's wages are 82% of their turnover - more healthy than City's 106% - but way off United's level of 46% and Arsenal's of 49%.

The figures also confirm that Chelsea reported losses of £70.9 million compared to £44.4 million the previous year. The club indicated earlier this week that they believe they will halve their losses in the next financial year.

The latest accounts also reveal that Chelsea will be liable for £3.8 million extra in National Insurance contributions if HM Revenue and Customs succeeds in its legal case that image rights payments should be taxed as income.

If that is proved, the players themselves would be liable to pay any tax individually in relation to image rights."

82% wages to turnover is incredible bad. Financial fair play rules limit to 70%. The ouster of those 5 players in the summer would have shaved off a chunk of it but now with Torres the highest earner at the club and Luiz arriving, it's back to square one.

This is for the year ending June 2010, when we still had Ballck, Joey, Deco, Belletti and Carvalho on the books, so things have obviously improved wage wise since then. And although city were spending less last season im sure with the new players they brought in over the summer and winter transfer windows they are right up there now and lets not forget Rooney's huge pay increase.

Basically we will be better off next year when the financial results are audited and published in the wages area even with Torres and Luiz. We are obviously ina good financial position or we would not have purchased Torres and Luiz, the board are not stupid and we have cut huge costs since June 2010

The latest man city financials dont include on the wage bill:

dzeko - 7-8m pa

yaya toure - 10m pa

kolorov - 4m pa

ballotelli - 9m pa

silva - 8m pa

boateng - 3-4m pa

milner - 5-6m pa

and also the hughes and his backroom pay off, say 5-10m

So thats at a conservative guess another £46 on their wage bill plus a one off in the region of 5-10m, and also ours would have decreased by about 25-30m with the players that have gone this summer.

Id expect another cull of deadwood and perhaps a top earner leaving as well so that the wage bill can be reduced further.

Well said mate. I'm also getting sick of people saying we can get rid of Drogba, big fucking deal he's not having an amazing season like last season but I can assure you he will pick up. I have read here that he has several years of world class football...Torres is here to replace him, nobody is talking about 17 years old player. Drogba is always the first to get knocked by our own supporters, people want him out once he starts under performing. I have faith DD will get his game back soon though, he always does.
