Speechless. Terrible terrible news. Can't begin to imagine how horrible it must be for him to retire at 21. Good to see the club look after him and provide for his future. Hope he earns his badges and becomes a top class coach at his boyhood club. Good luck Sam.

Carlo Ancelotti has praised Sam Hutchinson for his attitude over the past three years, and expressed his hope that the young defender stays with the club following his retirement.

The 21-year-old was forced to bring an end to his promising career following three years of knee problems, but plans to stay with the club as an Academy coach while also studying sports science at university.

'We are sad, disappointed about this, he decided to retire after very strong work to recover from his injury,' Ancelotti said.

'He was not able to do this but now we are together to look forward to support him in everything. He will start to study sports science, he will start to train with our Academy, and we would like that he stays in our family because he has a strong character and showed this during the years when he tried to recover from the injury.

'He is a very good man and can have a fantastic job here in Chelsea and support us with his character,' the manager continued.

'Obviously he is sad now but he has to look forward, there are a lot of things. You can't play but you can do different jobs in football, he loves football and we will support his passion.'

I'm really happy at what Chelsea are doing. Like Zakkko said, most other teams would trash this kid out onto the street! But we're supporting him through his uni course and letting him know he still has a future at Chelsea Football Club.

I watched Hutch play in Los Angeles in a friendly against Inter a year ago and he was on for the second half, I stuck around and watched him in the warm down as well.

He was one the best players on the pitch. Gutted about this news. Hope to keep seeing him in Chelsea in the future

Absolutely gutting for the lad and the club. But unfortunately it was somewhat on the cards, he will just never be able to recover properly and i guess the advise he has been given after his most recent set back is that he is better of retiring or he may find himself with serious problems down the line and not be able to walk properly or something like that.

Good to see the club are going to help him become a coach at Chelsea, a very good idea. Bring him through up and give him the training needed i am sure he could be a good coach.

Very very sad news, such a good player too.

ohmy.gif F*cking hell

I feel sorry for him, thought a rich club like us could help him with his treatment.

He looked excellent the few times I saw him, that assist to Lamps was brilliant.

He's been with us since he was 9 so the club would have covered all of his treatment. Just too many operations and clearly the thought was that he just wouldn't be able to cope with professional sport. Best of luck, seems like one of the good guys and Chelsea look after their own.

He deserves better. Shame we only could see glimpses of his talent, like the assist for Lampard against Stoke.

Hope we will see him return als a chelsea first-team coach or assistant one day, he probably will be an instant legend :)

  • 9 months later...

Sam has started training again over the last few weeks. Apparently Sam asked for a professional contract with the club, but they rejected, which is understandable.

No way?!

So he's past the injuries? :o
