Last time was with bigger names but still more a collection of cup upsets,as for most of those big names it was their last hurrah.but in some ways it was like Greece winning the 2004 euros,we were champions of Europe but nowhere near the best team in Europe. This season I'd say we still weren't the best team in Europe due to our league season but we did perform like worthy champions during our European nights.and unlike 2012 this is the start not the end of glory years with the majority of this squad.

Those are bad foresigns again.

would be mad to lose the damn super cup for a fourth time in a row va arguably the weakest side but the euros is obviously a huge advantage for villareal. It is also weird that the  europa league champ only has 6 international players and the rest have a summer long holiday.
On the plus side, many guys like Azpi, RJ will be just riding the bench for most parts and will not exactly be overplayed such that they need a mega holiday. Probably will also not lose as much fitness as players who have the whole summer off

Taking time off isn't just about physically resting from playing it's also about giving your mind a rest from the pressures. Even not playing they're still part of the preparation and in a position where they could be thrown into a high pressure situation at any moment.

A break mentally is probably even more important this time round given the relentless schedule of the last year.

Thinking back, apart from Tammy all our attackers had atleast one clutch goal en route to this trophy.

Giroud had the winner in Rennes then the four goals in Spain to help us top the group then the winner against Atletico in the first leg.

Ziyech gave us the crucial second of the tie against Leti.

Mount scored the opener vs Porto and the tie sealer vs Madrid.

Pulisic scored the opener against Real away.

Werner scored in the second leg.

Havertz ofcourse scored in Porto.

Even Callum opened the scoring in two group games and who knows what would have happened had he not done that.

Infact you could argue even with Tammy vs Rennes he eliminated any chance of a comeback, small but you never know.

Was properly a team effort.

There were so many outstanding bits about this CL win to the point it's hard to say which one is the most impressive of the lot.

One thing that arguably hasn't been mentioned much is the fact that we only trailed for 5 minutes in the entire CL campaign and those 5 minutes were pretty much unimportant - 4 minutes in the dead rubber Krasnodar game and 1 minute after conceding that late winner against Porto. We were always in control otherwise and "got" the game to play out the way we want to.

From a trivial POV that goal Porto scored was irritating.

Prevented us being unbeaten Champions and Mendy from getting the clean sheet record.

For sure, but it is a tradeoff between mental rest and physical sharpness for the game in question. If you trained most of summer you probably will still better perform on the night than someone who had the whole summer off and only recently restarted training.  Long term obviously the former will be more prone to burnout or other signs of mental fatigue. Obviously would still prefer our whole squad to have the summer off and restart training when TT sees fit.

But we need to win the super cup regardless. I could not stand to lose it 4 times in a row.

Silva, Kante and Jorginho are most likely to play finals with NTs (Zouma, Emerson and Giroud also but they are leaving most likely) so with 3 weeks holiday after that they would not come before August.

Silva, Jorginho yes (and Emerson who is leaving most likely) but Chilwell, Mount and James instead of French players.

So I think Villarreal will come too soon for these players. Hopefully Chris is not seriously injured. Yes, James and Ben did not play but still they will get 3 weeks of holiday after the final.

                           Mendy

             Azpi?           ?      Rudiger

     CHO     Kante     Kovacic     Alonso

      Pulisic(Ziyech)  Havertz  Werner

More than enough to get this trophy!
