I don't know, their 'sensible' transfer policy under Fergie left them with the likes of Jones, Smalling, Young, Nani, Anderson, Bebe, Kagawa, Zaha...etc. Sure they have a few success like RVP but the majority of their deals in his last 5 years has been terrible. Partly the reason why they are in disarray atm actually.

Also Fergie did have absolute control, he was virtually the King of their club and everything goes through him. I doubt the club would have missed out on Lucas, Hazard if he didn't deem them to be too expensive. Of course this would have never happened under his watch, he is an old thinking manager who don't believe in spending huge shocking amount of money, he is happy for the Glazer to bleed MU dry.

Anderson and Nani were two of the hottest young properties in football at the time, it was a huge statement by United signing them. Kagawa was Germany player of the year, Jones and Smalling were decent prospects but have been shoved all over the place.

You could argue Fergie got a bit to sensible in his late years, questioning Edens price tag speaks volumes.

Basically Fergie would never have thrown obscene wages or transfers at a player (Rooney being the only exception).

Think the signing of Kagawa was just to maintain the interest of the Asian market rather than because he was the player of the year in German then. IIRC, they sold Park Ji-Sung around that time.
