For those saying who was 'solid' defensively, take a look at the goal that we conceded. His positioning at the near post is a joke...

He was positioned correctly at the start, but took a step to try to make the angle harder. The goal was Fernando's mistake, he was marking murphy at the start of the corner.

The whole team collectively was rubbish for the corner, useless blaming solely one player.

Anyway Bertrand understandably looked slightly rusty but given a run of games I have no doubt whatsoever we'll see quality on the left side as we do with Ivan - Bertrand is a good player. Even against Birmingham he was better than most other Cole appearances. It does not help that team-mates ignore his runs.

That. It was a joke of a defending. We had like 6-7 players in the penalty box and only 3-4 Birmingham players and yet, we somehow left Murphy completely unmarked! Embarrassing.

On Bertrand, thought he did ok yesterday. Nothing spectacular and was solid. Hoping to see more of him this season.

Didn't AVB say in a press conference about 4 months ago that the club were negotiating a deal with his agent?? Two situations:

1) It's to prevent him from leaving on a free because he still has a good market value. We should be able to get 10 million for him considering the likes of Ngog went for 5 I believe

2) It's to keep him as a backup which I am not totally against. If we are getting rid of Drogba, Malouda and co. all in one transfer window, we might not be able to sign "squad players"

I just hope that it isn't offering him ridiculous wages considering his contributions and isn't more than a 2 year deal.

Very good post Meera, totally agreed on all accounts. I've always liked him as a squad player, plus he is still relatively young.
