That to me means that it's stupid to sell him to a rival. It's not as though we're selling them a transformative player who will elevate them to a whole new level, but any improvement at all we provide for a rival is too much in my eyes.

I respect what he has done for this club, he's been very good but also poor at times, but it's time to replace him with someone much better, maybe not so much in his position but elsewhere. Bakayoko will be an excellent purchase IMO, but the money from Matic must be fully invested in this squad quickly.

You are right, every signing Mourinho has ever made has been perfect. Id rather believe what I saw with my own eyes during the last 2 seasons. Matic has been bang average.

Pretty sure even Mourinho was subbing Matic off / not playing him during his last season here.

Matic has been bang average and Conte still chose to play him and not by another CM in January. Ok... Matic had more solid games than poor games but fans on here just like to scapegoat certain players. Same like Cahill. Had a solid season last one but one mistake and suddenly he is awful for whole season. You wouldn't be able to tell me all the games last season Matic was apparently 'awful' in. Anyway next season will show much of an improvement he had made United I guess then we can see who was proven right and wrong.

2 things I worry about if he goes to United:

1. We are selling to United, now why would you do that?/

2. Not having a replacement in place.

Our squad looks depleted as is with more players leaving than joining and more competitions to play why would the club put us in this position. Unless this is like a way to kind of lure someone in by giving them hope that they would be vital for the club. But the way the transfer is happening it looks like some of the good players only want money and aren't quite keen on playing/achieving their potential.

Who could we have realistically bought in January? Which team would sell to us without demanding enormous fees? It speaks for itself when Bakayoko was the first name we got linked with at the end of the season.

Fair enough. Prices are ridiculously inflated in January but during that 13 game win streak or majority of games we won, he was solid. I get he was not as solid as he was when he re-joined us and that excellent first season but he still was a useful player. And FWIW, he is much more composed and reliable at holding the ball than Kante. Obviously Kante is smaller but in terms of keeping possession was more reliable because of his larger frame. I just see United being a serious force next season. Matic/Herrera/Pogba for me is a much bigger threat than our midfield provides.

So finally the fee is going to be 40m and not 50 as reported a while ago by the telegraph and other reports. It remains a good deal but I feel we could have gotten more since we're selling to a rival. I guess in the end they were the only ones willing to pay that much.

You have to spend money in order to be a better team. Matic suits United perfectly and they got the CM they were craving.

Was he world class? On his day, yes (Too far between). Was I completely frustrated with him some games? Yes. Did I want him going to a direct rival considering thats the position they desperately need to cover? Absolutely not, this is a completely mindless move from Chelsea.
