I love this theme of people seemingly failing to acknowledge someone's frailties and lambast others for stating them in the process.

Aside from the goal, give me a rundown on what he did positive?

He was decent, not great.  He looked more dangerous for me in the first half. Second half faded but did he come up with the goods? Yes, he did and was a brilliant finish. That is enough for me. Did I thought Abraham was that good apart from the goal? No, but if he gets himself in right position and scores, then I am fine with that.

A striker's job is to score, first and foremost, whilst much more is expected from a winger.

The goal we conceded came about from him losing the ball trying to beat his man btw (different phase isn't of interest).

But Willian did put a good cross in the box which was well defended IIRC. Also there was one where IIRC, the ball just evaded Tammy. BBC also gave him the MOTM too. The set piece goal they scored should have been defender better either way. Willian provided the winner in the end of the day. More positive than negative, of course. But not surprised with Willian, when people rather focus on the negative than the positive.

9 times out of 10, a match winner gets MOTM. Him getting it doesn't prove anything, but I guess we can all cherry pick. [emoji16]

Well if you read their comments you will see they said he was a threat all game. Skysports also gave him a good rating too, despite giving MOTM award to Tammy. I think we are cherry picking if we are still looking to say he had a bad game :D I am pretty sure Lamps will have him in the starting 11 next game, if he is fit...

We know how Lampard views the alternative, so he won't be dropped anytime soon.

Who was a better right winger than Willian ?
Zappacosta ? Moses ?

Stats in the PL :

Willian 204 games 29 goals

Pedro 129 games 28 goals

So in the last couple of seasons Pedro was our best right winger. And before Kalou gave us much more than Willian overall. But that's not a point. We needed to upgrade on both Willian and Pedro for about 3 years now.

Goal return is only ONE of the things to look at while comparing. Willian was a far far better fit in our system. With Hazard we needed an industrious right winger/right midfielder, which fit willian perfectly.

This justification about Willian being in the XI is entering the 'Oscar is in the XI to provide balance' territory...

And equally, the excuses and reasoning for bashing him for any little thing is entering the Rafa terrority.

Yet both cases were true. Do you realize we won the league with Fabregas in double pivot and Hazard. Two player who are atrocious defensively

Don't I know it. But there was Azpi playing at LB to cover Hazard and Matic - before he went downhill in 2015/16 - to protect Fabregas and not to mention, we were playing in a more defensive system back then under Mourinho, especially when he decided to shut up shop after December 2014.

Not really, it all depend on your personel and system. You have striker like firmino and a while ago benzema who score maybe just 10 goals a season
Firmino scored 16 goals in all comps last season & he's playing alongside the two best wingers ATM.

There's obviously the odd exception, but please don't compare that to what we have.

Both Azpi and Oscar to cover Cesc and Hazard. Once Cesc go forward he simply cannot go back so Oscar cannot play like no 10 who just bomb forward.

In a perfect world, you want your striker to score goals, your winger to create and score and help your fb, your midfield to create and defend central area, your defender to defend but depending on what you have, you need to adjust.
