PSV confirm intention to sign Marco van Ginkel after Chelsea pass on extension

FC Utrecht v PSV - Dutch Eredivisie

Marco van Ginkel returned to familiar grounds at PSV Eindhoven this season to complete his knee rehab and return to playing after a two-year absence. It was always understood, if not explicitly said, that his latest loan to the Eredivisie giants was with a view towards a permanent move.

And it sounds like that is indeed what will be happening, with Van Ginkel doing relatively well on the pitch and Chelsea doing the right thing to let the 28-year-old go for free by passing on a contract extension option. PSV technical manager, John de Jong has now confirmed the situation as well.

“I think you are always looking for the ideal balance of leadership, mentality and talent. It is nice to see how Marco van Ginkel has returned and that he can handle the level. We know what trajectory he comes from and I am happy to see that he is doing so well.”

“When you talk about leadership and character, he is an example. Because of that last week with three games in eight days, everyone now has the feeling that they can handle the load. I think it is very logical that we will discuss a contract with him.”

“This also depends on the financial conditions, of course. We have waited until the moment he would be transfer-free or not. Chelsea had the chance to exercise an option until May 15, and to our knowledge that did not happen. Marco seems very satisfied and would like to continue. I assume that we will come together, but you never know for sure in advance.”

Van Ginkel’s best performances since joining Chelsea way back in 2013 have come while on loan at PSV, and a permanent move there should indeed be the ideal solution for all parties involved.

Good luck, Marco!
