Ba signed a three-and-a-half-year contract, becoming the first ever Senegalese player to join the club. He received the vacant number 29 shirt. Ba made his debut against Southampton in the third round of the FA Cup on 5 January. He marked his first appearance for the club by scoring two goals in a 51 victory for Chelsea. He scored on his home league debut on 16 January in the 2-2 draw against the same club.On 2 February 2013, Ba first played his former team Newcastle in a Premier League match. The match was held at Newcastle's St. James' Park. In the 32nd minute of the match Ba had a chance to open the scoring but his initial attempt on goal was saved by Newcastle keeper Tim Krul. Ba managed to head the rebounded ball and in doing so collided with Coloccini. The collision resulted in a broken nose and Ba was substituted in the 43rd minute. Newcastle went on to win the game 32. Share Posted January 4, 2013 (edited) Rafael Benitez has made his first signing as Chelsea manager by bringing in Newcastle forward Demba Ba for £7 million, Demba Ba.With a goals-to-games ratio of one in two in the Premier League, the Senegalese striker has been signed to ease the burden on lone frontman Fernando Torres. A proven goalscorer, much has been said of Ba's supposedly crocked knees; yet the African star has a superb injury record during this time in European football. A man who is as good in the air as he is at holding the play up, Ba's more direct style will offer a second option to having Torres as the sole striker. With Newcastle signing Papiss Cissé last season, Ba also found himself operating on the wing, and this is another string to the new number 16's bow. Due to the Football League's rules, Ba is eligible for the League Cup semi-finals against Swansea, and having not yet represented Newcastle in the FA Cup, the former Hoffenheim striker will also be available to Benitez in that competition. He will however not be allowed to feature in the Blues' Europa League adventure this term.
