Will Meireles be missed?

Yes if we keep playing 4-2-3-1 because we simply don't have enough players to play there (can and should change in January)

No if we switch to 4-3-3.

How is that we don't have enough players for a two-man midfield but enough for a three-man midfield?

Because Oscar and Ramires for example are better suited to a 3 man midfield. Bertrand could also fill in there, and possibly also Luiz like BM/Eddie Newton said.

But Eddie also said that Oscar can play in Lampard's role and David may play in Mikel's.

No he didn't. I should know, I watched the interview :P

From BM's thread:

Oscar can play in number of positions. We are blessed with players who can play in multiple postions. He can play in the number 7 role. Again he is not going to be a old fashion winger. He’s not that style of player. He can play in the number 10 role. He can also play in the 6 and 8 role. Where Lampard and Obi play. He isn’t ready to play in the number 6 or 8 role yet, but it’s something he has. The number 10 and 7 he can play in those positions the most.

:P

The simple fact is that Meireles is much more suited to the double pivot then Lampard is.

Its sickening to think that we may be stuck with the Lampard-Mikel partnership. Since there is doubts if Oscar can play there and Di Matteo for some reason refuses to give Romeu chances.

It's all about trusting the youngsters we have. Now instead of Meireles and Essien being used for rotation, we'll get Oscar and Oriol. I don't get the over reaction on here about this matter, we've been saying that we should drop our 'less effective' senior players for youngsters for years now.

Only to an extent, we still need experience or we will end up on the receiving end of battering's at places like Stoke in more way 's than one.

With him gone, I want to see Romeu playing Mikel's role, with Mikel trying out a new role where he's allowed to roam a bit more; like Meireles did.

Just for a game or two.

Mikel should be fined for every shot he takes though! He can't hit them quite like Raul.

true that but the squad is never big enough. cover like meireles wouldn't hurt. don't see the point in selling. we had space in the squad

I've always wondered how long a Hipster would last in a country like Turkey...

As a player I won't miss him, but I will miss his cover for the Starting XI. WIthout him [and Essien for that matter] the team looks a tad hollow.

After 10min looking at the brunette I realised Raul was in the photo! :)

I can understand the sale. Rather than needing to appease four non-regular starters (Romeu, Merieles, Essien, Oscar) we only need to appease the two. This gives these two young players extra game time to develop into the stars many reckon they will become and surely already are to an extent.

If we get a group of injuries in the same area now, we could struggle. Say if both Ramires and Mikel were to be injured (not unrealistic) we would have only Lampard, Romeu and perhaps Oscar to cover in the double pivot. If one or more of these is not performing we won't have anyone to replace them with, furthermore we will be walking on egg shells to try and prevent further injuries, which could prevent the full commitment of the players.

selling both of them is a risk because we need good(ish) squad players. Meireles did a good job against Newcastle and we could have used him in the CL or like last year as a 3rd choice. agree withthe romeu and oscar getting a chance part but it is as Spike put it, the squad looks a tad hollow now
