Maybe Jose wants him to be a defensive 'utility' man - defining his game in all positions so he can add more depth to his squad and his overall game?

Actually, ake as an utility player does makes the most sense out of anyone on Chelsea....

I was hoping he get some run at CM, but w.e.

In the wake of Ryan Bertrand's loan to Aston Villa, there've been plenty of questions about Chelsea's depth at fullback. Bertrand's absence meant that Chelsea are now down to three senior players -- Ashley Cole, Cesar Azpilicuetaand Branislav Ivanovic -- to cover two positions, which is dangerously light for a squad that will (hopefully) be playing a lot of matches between now and the end of the season.

Jose Mourinho is compensating for this by promoting another youngster. Nathan Ake, who saw some time with the first team as a defensive midfielder last season, is being brought into the senior squad to serve as cover:

Because Bertrand is leaving I'm bringing Ake now to the squad because he is a player that can play there, and even in an emergency
or Branislav Ivanovic can play left-back. So even though only Ashley Cole is a specialist left-back we don't have problems.

-Source:

It's not a bad idea by any measure, although Ake's performance at left back is obviously a step below what we might ahve expected from Bertrand. Ake actually playing there would require an unfortunate set of circumstances, so we're hopefully not going to see it happening, but we now have backup just in case -- and Ake will once again be developing by training with the big boys.

Still could, but with the role as the utility man he would be more effective.

Actually, rambo is technically kind of that role....

Except prior to Matic, our cms were under par.

Essien used to play in that kind of role. Started off as a Cb, but worked as a DMC, but played RB a few times.

I share the above sentiments - when Jose says he's bringing him into the squad I assume he means a couple of bench appearances and possibly 5 minutes at the end of our FA Cup 5th round match if he's lucky.

will he be able to play in the youth CL?

We turned down loan approaches for him from Burnley, Watford and Wigan apparently. I would've prefered him getting a good run of games in the Championship instead of sitting on our bench just because he's versatile.
