Come on. Would take Alonso anyday. I agree cover would have been nice but not at the range of Targett.  He's Villa's Alonso

I would lose my bloody mind if we bought Matt Targett!

ffs, we have not fallen to that level of desperation and stupidity

an almost Drinkwater level dumb move if it happened

Although I was initially impressed with his power I soon decided that there wasn't enough technique in his game for me to want him here.  That was back when he was being linked with us a handful of seasons ago. I haven't watched him since but, based on that impression, I wouldn't be surprised if all of these links now are nothing more than an active agent doing what agents do.

Yes, he is a pass for me as well. He never really kicked on to truly super level after his Atalanta breakthrough.

Arsenal turned down Icardi swap

Their main focus looks set to be the striker department following the departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona, while Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah have expiring contracts.

It was well documented that the north London club did study solutions last month — with Dusan Vlahovic, Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought to have been their primary targets. Much rested on Aubameyang, who was also wanted by Juventus, and reports claimed that at one point Arsenal were looking into a swap that would have seen Alvaro Morata move the other way.

Such ideas were not uncommon and The Athletic has learnt that Arsenal also had the opportunity to explore a potential exchange involving Paris Saint-Germain’s Argentinian forward Mauro Icardi.

The 28-year-old joined the French side from Inter Milan on loan in 2019 before completing a permanent switch a year later. He has scored 38 goals in 87 appearances yet is not a regular starter unless one or more of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar are unavailable to play.

This might have been an interesting prospect but, as with various possibilities that came Arsenal’s way, it did not develop because Arsenal were clear on the candidates they would be prepared to pursue and if none materialised they would stick with existing options until the end of the season.

That proved to be the case and manager Mikel Arteta will hope his squad can finish the Premier League campaign strongly before revisiting the recruitment situation with technical director Edu.

Dortmund sees Noussair Mazraoui as a very interesting option. There have already been talks with Mino Raiola. However, he isn't the number one transfer target. Dortmund main priority is to sign Karim Adeyemi.
