Paul Wanner: The ‘brutally ambitious’ 16-year-old breaking records at Bayern

Paul Wanner wrote his name into the record books last week when he became Bayern Munich’s youngster ever Bundesliga player, aged 16 years and 15 days.

The boy who broke Jamal Musiala’s record then came off the bench for another late cameo in Saturday’s 4-0 win away at Cologne.

Wanner, who manager Julian Nagelsmann calls an “incredible talent”, possesses the qualities that German football wants to see more of. This is a player who looks to move the game forward with their first touch, enjoys one-on-one situations and often looks to play a defence-splitting pass.

Born two days before Christmas in 2005, Wanner grew up in the beautiful Allgau region in southern Germany to an Austrian mother and a father who played professional football in Austria.

Bayern Under-17s coach Alexander Moj has known Wanner since the teenager was nine — and has coached him for the last three years.

“He has a very calm family who are down to earth and never put pressure on him to be a professional or play at Bayern Munich. It was always Paul’s decision,” Moj tells The Athletic.

“He wasn’t always in the academy boarding house, which made it possible for him to connect with family and friends. It wasn’t just football all the time, and I think that helped him hugely.”

For Moj, it is Wanner’s love for a challenge that separates him from the rest.

“He is brutally ambitious,” Moj tells The Athletic. “The harder the challenge, the higher his performance — he really is someone who grows through a challenge. He needs it.”

Moj believes his confidence has grown in recent years as he has become aware of his undoubted ability.

“I think the under-14 indoor season, when we played against top teams and won awards, was the moment when he realised not only was he better than other players but he was also better than he thought he was.”

Wanner hasn’t looked back since, regularly playing a year up in youth football. In the under-19s at Bayern, he is effectively playing against kids two years older than him and yet he still dazzles.

In December 2021, Wanner displayed some of his incredible dribbling ability when Bayern Under-19s faced their Hertha Berlin counterparts in the Under-19 German Cup.

Earlier that year, in the opening minutes of an under-17s international against Italy, Wanner got the ball from a throw-in and weaved in and out of five players, before applying a neat finish.

Wanner’s favourite player in the Bayern first team is Musiala — so much so that he was worried how he would feel when he broke his record (of course, Musiala didn’t mind).

“Paul’s sensory processing skills are strong because he trains them regularly, which in turn gives him stability on the field,” Malte Hartmann told The Athletic.

For the last three years, Wanner has been working with Hartmann, a neuro athletic coach, with the aim of stimulating the brain and the nervous system to unlock more physical potential. This approach is popular among many Germany athletes and has also been embraced by Liverpool. A lot of players from Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning team used it during the tournament in Brazil and the DFB (German football association) have implemented it in its academy since 2018.

Wanner and Hartmann see each other every other week, and have a conversation almost daily.

“The first session he came in, he was really small, nice, quiet. I can still remember it well,” Hartmann told The Athletic. “The motor skills he had back then were impressive. They would have been for a professional player, but for a 13-year-old who just wanted to kick the ball around to have that level of motor skills was impressive. You could see then he wanted to work on himself.”

The first time Wanner trained with the first team, he was 15. After the first of two sessions, he recognised his legs were heavy and so called Hartmann in Stuttgart, almost 150 miles away, and asked him to come that night so he could recover and impress in the second session the following day.

“This is what sets him apart. I didn’t have to call him to talk about recovery. He called me, knowing it was the right thing to do for him. That is impressive at that age,” Hartmann told The Athletic.

Wanner isn’t just smart on the football pitch, he is still managing to get good grades at a Gymnasium (the most advanced of the three types of secondary school in Germany) that often sees him finish classes at 4.30pm and start training at 5pm.

When back home, Wanner loves to play football with his cousin and best friend, as well as a game of FIFA or two. He listens to hip-hop, with Drake and Lil Tjay on the playlist at the moment. Most of all though, he loves his Austrian grandmother’s cooking.

Bayern are excited about Wanner for many reasons.

Marco Neppe, their technical director, said after Wanner’s first time training with the seniors that the teenager was “rotzfrech” (German for cocky or bold), dribbling the ball like he was in the park. He may be confident in his play but the teenager remains grounded, picking up the bibs and the balls at training.

Wanner’s current contract expires in the summer. The truth is there are options for him elsewhere in the Bundesliga, but right now Bayern are in pole position — provided of course the club can guarantee him a path similar to that of Musiala. The two players have the same agent.

Given he has been at Bayern since he was 12, and he would effectively become the first local lad since Thomas Muller 14 years ago to make the jump into the first team, it seems logical that the German champions will do all they can to keep him around.

The hope is that what Musiala was to Flick, Wanner could be to Nagelsmann.

“Delay in the game,” Bochum said on their social media account after an assistant referee was hit on the head by an inject in the game with Borussia Monchengladbach. “Some idiot has thrown something towards the pitch and hit the linesman. The game has been delayed. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible behaviour, it has no place in a stadium! Idiot idiot idiot. Hopefully the linesman is ok.”

Bochum’s Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening was abandoned on 71 minutes after an assistant referee was hit on the head with a cup of beer.

 

With Gladbach leading 2-0, an assistant was struck with an object from the stands - believed to be a cup of beer.

The actions prompted a stinging response from the club’s Twitter account.

“Delay in the game,” it read.

 

“Some idiot has thrown something towards the pitch and hit the linesman. The game has been delayed. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible behaviour, it has no place in a stadium! Idiot idiot idiot. Hopefully the linesman is ok.”

Bochum players, including goalkeeper Manuel Riemann and captain Anthony Losilla were swiftly on hand to check on the assistant and to admonish those in the vicinity of where the cup was thrown from.

 

Referee Benjamin Cortus called a halt to the game before opting to abandon the match a short time later.

"The match will not be restarted, #BOCBMG has been abandoned," Bochum added.

"We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelmannn. A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan."

The incident took place a few hours after Bochum had posted a video on Twitter urging fans to drink their beer rather than throw it from the stands.

 

Bochum went into the game 10 points clear of the relegation and the relegation play-off positions.

Borussia Monchengladbach started the day two points behind Bochum on 31 points.
