Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas praised Valencia midfielder Juan Mata amid reports the winger is close to signing for the club.

Reports in the Spanish media say the Valencia player, 23, is set to join the Stamford Bridge side for £23.5m.

After the club's 2-1 win over West Brom, Villas-Boas would not be drawn on whether he was trying to sign Mata.

But he said: "He's a player who scores and assists and he can add to any squad in the world."

He added: "He's not our player but he's an interesting player...a very good player."

Mata has been at Valencia since 2007 and helped Spain win the under-21 European Championship in the summer.

Villas-Boas has previously spoken of the need to recruit more midfielders and the club have also made bids for Tottenham's Luka Modric.
