Anyways I watched the match again so I think jose used this match to try different tactical variations. First half summary. In the first half, he tried the 4-3-3 but he used ramires, lamps and MVG. Ramires and lampard were lost on who was the more attacking player of the two so there was so much inbalance in the first half. Player analysis. Ramires lost a few balls and failed to continue following marcelo before he scored. But take nothing away from his sublime finish. Oscar was forced to play on the wings where we know he's not good, I'm sure mourinho has seen that too first hand. Ivanovic at right back was there to face the physicality of ronaldo so he didn't attack much because of that. But his passing was very bad, he and cahill reminded me of why we should not sell david luiz. Every single time they kicked the ball in the sky and couldn't pick out any pass longer than 6 yards shocking. A major reason we were horrible in the first half was because of this. Ashely cole was our best defender MVG was bad in the early minutes but he grew into the game with nice tackles. He was a little short attacking wise though. Lampard was bad, but mourinho wanted to speed up his match fitness in a high class friendly so that's that. Lukaku was bad with his runs, but he wasn't helped by the confusing midfield we tried to play. Hazard was invisible in the first half, but on closer look I thought they marked him very closely. Second half summary This was a much better half. We went back to the usual 4-2-3-1 formation. With moses and hazard in the wings and KDB in the center. We were pressing well and we became better than madrid till the 70th minute when KDB was moved to the pivot. But the goal ronaldo scored was their first chance in the half but ivanovic was found guilty of allowing isco too much room to cross as usual and JT didn't even attempt to jump for the ball. Ronaldo was too fast for any of the DM to follow him and he came from the wing to the center so the cross was actually what we failed to stop defensively Player anaysis Ivanovic was bad till he got into the center back position Cahill and cole were average with azpi. Ramires and MVG were perfect in the 2nd half Moses had an energy we lacked in the attack from oscar but his decision making in the final third was bad. Hazard came to life in this half till he got tired in the last 20mins. He dissapeared when KDB was told to sit in the pivot. KDB was magnificent at first and he provided extra intensity and spreading passes especialy when behind torres. But when jose moved him to the pivot, he was bad. Torres was actualy good. His linkup play was great, and he was making good runs actually. Maybe it was because of the improved overall midfield but he looked better than most pple thought. Essien was good with more controll in the midfield but was no where to be found when madrid countered us a couple of times, since his partner in the pivot(KDB) was a more attacking player, I expected essien to put a better defensive duty. He was bad in that aspect but his passing foward was good. So in summary Mourinho tried new things in this match and got his answers. The best formation he got was the 2nd half one. But he also learned that KDB was bad in the pivot and oscar was bad in the wings. I hope he also learned that iva is a better CB than cahill and is not a good right back. I'm happy we played this match, a lot of his tactical questions were answered.

Okay, i was not too keen on this transfer because i gave up when we didnt get cavani or lewandoski. But i think im coming around this transfer. We all have complained of how our attack seems blunt and out of ideas, but we may not know that it could actually be solved with a proper link up striker. All our strikers like the through pass in open space but none of them can actually keep it in tight spaces. This means we are practically playing with ten men when the opposition defends deep and blocks channels since(torres, lukaku, ba) thrive on space. This fact is evident in German national team where they looked toothless with gomez up front but far better with klose as the top striker for link up. All these years where we have complained that we are being toothless we never had a mobile, link up striker(lewandoski, aguero, rooney, tevez, suarez, benzema, mandzukic, jovetic) These are all mobile and make the attack more dangerous with link up passes with the am, wingers and runs all over the pitch. So i think we need to go all out and get rooney, even if he gives us just 3 good years. He could mould lukaku into a proper striker by then.

Nice report. First of all I think it was a nice way to get fit for our players, its just a preseason and Jose needed a tough one like this to really know the flaws of our players and team as a whole. I don't think he'll ignore the flaws of our team just because its a friendly. We played well in the begining of the 2nd half till ivanovic let isco about 5 mins to pic out a cross to ronaldo. When KDB was moved back into the pivot and MvG was taken off, it became a disaster show lol. But the flaws that we need to work on were too obvious, 1. we looked terrible with possesion. This didn't bother me too much because mata didn't play. He is the god of our possesion play. But what if he doesn't play because of a knock. 2. We were not good enough pressing madrid. We need to put pressure on bigger teams and stop being too respectful, if not for numerous tackles and interceptions from MVG we would have been even more dominated. 3. Hazard was not interested in the first half of the match, I like the spirit he brought in the begining of the 2nd half. But he needs a proper schooling from ramires on how to finish one on ones with the keeper. This is his second one on one miss this preseason. 4. The defence were not good enough, but I blame this on the overall pressing of the ball. Cahill needs to stop backing off players. This is how adebayor scored us last season the same backing off from him, he should watch how MVG and cole tackles the ball from people. 5. Torres has even better runs and link up play than lukaku. Madrid ran over us like a steam roller when he was put there to replace MVG. He should stay higher up the pitch against big teams, we missed his incisive passing because of this. 7. I think peter cech should train on his kicks better, he almost never finds a chelsea player even though we had someone as big as lukaku upfront in there. There were some times he could pass to one of the full backs but once the two CBs are marked, the possesion is lost to madrid. Positives that we could build on 1. Essiens long passing was impressive, I want essien and MVG/ramires to play the pivot. In the pivot, One strong passer and one box to box tackler is needed to keep the balance between possesion and defending. Two of the same kind is not good enough in a way: if there are two B2B, we would be terrible in possession and if there are two slow passers, we would be too open in the defence. 2. this is a just a friendly but its also one of the last games for the players to prove they should be in mourinho's starting lineup for the early matches of the season. So if they don't put their all and take it as just another preseason game, then a more serious worker will take his place. So lets not just say its a preseason game and think jose will just forget about the flaws that is needed to be corrected. Its not good to overeact on the loss but lets not totally ignore important tactical points in the match.
