I meant it like: If Mou trusts Mikel and Ramires to cover Fabregas and Matic, I think he could as well give youth players the chance to stand in for our defenders. IMO the gap in quality would be proportionate.

In a world were Mikel, RLC and Ramires are actually considered as options of a top team, not having enough numbers is never the problem. We probably need a backup for both, Fabregas and Matic. Even though I agree that we looked even more helpless without Fabregas. Matic probably is the only player who can offer the kind of protection Fabregas defensive incompetence requires. Additionally, Mou tends to sacrifice Oscar for Ramires in big games, so he acknowledges that we need more solidity and physical presence in midfield. What saddens me most is that he obviously still believes in Ramires to be that big game player which he has proven not to be any more. If Mourinho really believes Mikel, Ramires, RLC are good enough to come in and help us win the CL than we don't need any signings at all, then we could as well promote Jake Clarke Salter instead of signing Stones.

As I have not seen much of him myself, I have spoken to some mates who have seen plenty of him. They attribute Augsburg's considerable success, establishing themselves as 6th in the Bundesliga and 2nd best team in Bavaria and best in Swabia to their tactically flexible backline whihc he was an integrable part of. What we can expect from him is great athleticism: pace, strength and stamina. His crosses can be hit and miss. He is better when operating with space so he can use his pace for the power dribbling than in tight spaces cos his ball control is not the best but still decent. On the downside he is prone to defensive errors and false positioning. Surely still has to develop but will inevitably get game time here because of our lack of other options.

Though they are in better early season form having started their preparations earlier. Let's hope our individual class shines through and our attackers run rings around Mertesacker. I think it is only a matter of time until English teams rule Europe again. The problem with BPL teams is they are tactically inferior and have a more bloated schedule hence more fatigue. But in terms of financial superiority this is only the beginning. In 10 years, all English clubs will be so wealthy, their failures on other aspects will be masked by their superior signings.
