  2. Ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant revealed last night that his former club are tracking Russian midfielder Yuri Zhirkov. Grant was commenting on the Euro 2008 semi-final between Russian and Spain for Israeli TV when he made the revelation. It was previously believed that Chelsea were eyeing Andrei Arshavin but Grant corrected rumours stating that the interest was in fact in Zhirkov. Zhirkov in action
  3. A former senior figure at Chelsea has accused the club of "inertia" and "betrayal" in a bid to claim compensation at an employment tribunal.Paul Smith, ex Group Business Affairs Director of Chelsea, told the hearing Peter Kenyon repeatedly refused to settle the terms of his employment at the club. He said he was initially offered a salary of £350,000 for six months, and the possibility of a 100% bonus and a six figure golden bonus after 10 years were mentioned. Mr Smith has a 25-year career in the football industry including staging the World Cup and UEFA matches. He had known Mr Kenyon since 1992 when their paths crossed professionally, and their relationship eventually led to a job at Chelsea in September 2003. The club had just been bought by Roman Abramovich and Mr Smith was "parachuted in" to cover as chief executive before Mr Kenyon began work. No written contract was drafted. Mr Smith said: "I was left to my own devices... Mr Abramovich merely told me not to screw up." He was working 15-16 hour days, six days a week, and was eventually given an employment contract at the end of October. This offered a salary of £300,000 and a 50% bonus, so Mr Smith did not sign but awaited negotiations with Mr Kenyon. Commenting on his work at that stage he said: "Mr Abramovich had sufficient confidence in me that I was entrusted with dealing on his behalf in the area closest to his heart, player transfers." Negotiations over his salary continued, and at one point he was offered £500,000 and a bonus of £250,000, but this was later withdrawn. Mr Smith said: "I was faced with an attitude reminiscent to one which confronted the pied piper: duties dispatched but respect and promises quickly forgotten." He added: "From the beginning there was inertia and betrayal of trust by Mr Kenyon." The former club executive said Mr Kenyon claimed he had been "neutered" by Roman Abramovich in terms of salary negotiations. Mr Smith added: "Trying to focus Mr Kenyon on a solution became virtually impossible. It was like trying to nail jelly to a wall." He is claiming a sum of £366,000 at the tribunal but claimed today that in terms of salary, bonus and unpaid benefits, the club owes him £950,000. Mr Smith will take action at the High Court to claim the rest of the money. Throughout his time at Chelsea, Mr Smith negotiated key deals including Samsung sponsorship worth £55million and football camps to be run with Disney. He said he was told of his dismissal in a "cold and robotic" way by Mr Kenyon, who had disliked his comments appearing in newspapers. He also accused Mr Kenyon of deliberately refusing to pay him and dismissing him to conceal this. He said: "By removing me, the facts would never surface to become a blemish on his managerial record. "If I had remained at CFC, Mr Kenyon would have had the embarrassment of having to explain away the history of the 'failed' contract negotiations and accumulative personal debt. With me gone, he could keep this sorry episode quiet for limited expense." The hearing continues. http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,1...3732051,00.html

  8. Frank Lampard is a step closer to being reunited with Jose Mourinho after the Chelsea star's agent revealed he would be meeting with Inter Milan bosses in the next 10 days. Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to lure Lampard to the San Siro, but this is the first time positive words about the move have emerged from the England midfielder's camp. The news comes amid reports that talks over a new Chelsea contract for the player have hit a snag over the length of the deal "At the moment I've been on holiday for about a week," Lampard's agent Franco Granello told Tuttomercatoweb. "But it doesn't seem to me that Lampard's transfer has already been completed. "I have a meeting with Inter in 10 days but for now I'm enjoying the rest, seeing as I have so little." Lampard, who turns 30 on Friday, has previously said he wants to stay at Chelsea but is demanding a four-year extension to his current contract while the club are reportedly only prepared to offer him half that. According to Italian media reports, Inter have already offered the former West Ham player a five-year deal. Lampard will have talks with Luiz Felipe Scolari when the new Blues boss begins work with the English club on July 1, days after Granello's meeting with Nerazzurri chiefs. The Italian champions have long been linked with the Chelsea star but matters were stepped up a pace when Mourinho, who helped Lampard thrive at Stamford Bridge, took over the helm at Inter. Earlier in the day the Portuguese coach had declared that Lampard, Deco and Didier Drogba were "players who I could never say no to," adding: "I would love to work with them again in the future". Mourinho's comments came just days after Inter president Massimo Moratti revealed Lampard was on his club's target list. http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overs...mp;TEAMHD=italy
  9. Valencia midfielder David Albelda has confirmed this week's reports of an offer arriving from Chelsea. "The subject is in the hands of my agent," Albelda told Las Provincias. "I have received an offer and Chelsea are sensational, but Valencia want money for me." http://www.tribalfootball.com/article.php?id=99179
  10. Coventry City assistant manager Steve Kean has been linked with a senior coaching role alongside new Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari. Kean had an unsuccessful spell at Celtic then spent six years as a player with Coimbra in Portugal, where he learned to speak Portuguese. Following coaching jobs at Reading and Fulham, Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman appointed Kean as his number two. Chelsea are set to open talks with Coventry on a potential offer. Scolari, 59, was announced as Chelsea manager in the aftermath of Portugal's qualification for the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, but speaks only a little English. However, his coaching pedigree speaks for itself. He won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and led Portugal to the final of Euro 2004, and has also won nine domestic trophies in Brazil. His reputation led him to be considered for the England manager's job in 2006 but he was reportedly put off the role because of fears of media intrusion. Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho had both a Portuguese speaking assistant manager - Baltemar Brito - and an English speaking one in Steve Clarke http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...sea/7462555.stm

  13. ose Mourinho and Luiz Felipe Scolari have a rivalry that has divided Portuguese football for the last five years but yesterday the former Chelsea manager finally buried the hatchet with his old adversary and gave him his blessing to take over at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho used the platform of his Portuguese newspaper column to say that Scolari had to move for one reason above all – the money. How long the fragile peace holds is debatable, especially as Massimo Moratti, Mourinho's employer as owner of Internazionale, yesterday finally went public in declaring that Frank Lampard was the "No 1 objective". At the same time Deco, who is pushing for a move to Chelsea, declared that his agent Jorge Mendes – also Scolari and Mourinho's agent – was in talks with the club. When Scolari takes over at Chelsea next month, the future of the England international will be among his priorities although the club said yesterday that it was "relaxed" about Moratti's statement and the fact that Lampard's future is yet to be decided. Scolari will have noticed, however, that Mourinho did refer to his former club as "my Chelsea". Under a heading of "Scolari at Chelsea", Mourinho asked: "Who can criticise the Portuguese national coach?" He added: "The journalists faced with such a proposal [more money] wouldn't say 'I love my newspaper a lot and I'm not interested in change even if you pay me three times as much. Even if professionally it is a better challenge'. Company directors approached by a bigger company? They would say 'I'm not leaving because I love it a lot here?' Who can criticise Scolari's decision?" Mourinho also said that the timing of the announcement was unavoidable, that a "super club like Chelsea" could not keep such an appointment quiet for so long and that Scolari's employers at the Portuguese football federation (FPF) could not be expected to keep it a secret either. "I think that Scolari has acted in the right way. He will be Chelsea manager from the day that European Championship are over for Portugal. "I don't believe he is studying English when he is supposed to be watching videos and analysing Germany. From my side I give him congratulations for the work he has done and I wish him a lot of luck – the best luck for "my Chelsea". They will always be mine and in my heart except if the Champions League draw puts us face to face." Moratti's declaration about Lampard was made in the newspaper Corriere dello Sport but he later confirmed on its official website that: "You can say that Mourinho likes Lampard, who is a great player, a lot. But that does not mean it will be easy to get him." Asked if Inter had approached Chelsea about the player, Moratti replied: "I think so, I don't know yet. Above all, what has been done up to now is a [transfer market] strategy with Mourinho." http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/footbal...sea-848528.html
  14. Former Chelsea captain Marcel Desailly told Sky Sports News that no player - including Didier Drogba - is bigger than the Stamford Bridge club. Drogba, who has scored 50 goals in 110 appearances for Chelsea since moving from Marseille in 2004, has been strongly linked with a switch to Inter Milan, where he would link up with former coach Jose Mourinho, as well as AC Milan. But former French international Desailly insists that while Drogba would be missed, he is not irreplaceable. "For sure - as a Chelsea fan," Desailly told Sky Sports News when asked if he would like the Ivory Coast star to stay at the London club. "He's meant a lot to Chelsea but I believe we shouldn't concentrate on him. "If he goes, Chelsea still have strength. "It's not the player who's more important - it's the club." Drogba, who could be tempted to stay with the Premier League and Champions League runners-up following the arrival of World Cup-winning manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, is contracted to the Blues until 2010.
  15. Italian champions Inter Milan have revealed that signing Chelsea's Frank Lampard is their priority this summer. New Inter manager Jose Mourinho is keen to capture the England midfielder from his former club, with whom Lampard has yet to sign a new contract extension. Inter president Massimo Moratti told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport: "He's our number one objective. Mourinho likes Lampard a lot." Moratti hinted Inter may have already started negotiations with the Blues. He added: "Has there been contact with Chelsea? I think there has but I don't know yet." Lampard's current deal expires next summer and both the 29-year-old and the London club said last month that they were confident of striking a deal. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...sea/7456926.stm
