  1. Literally nobody here was talking about champions league. 🤷‍♂️ Reckon some of us merely rather be competing with the other big clubs given that we pretty much outspent everyone else in the league. This whole thing is still about winning matches and getting silverware, not finding out if random kids we can become professional footballers. How do you know the young players will settle or find themselves? maybe there is nothing to be found? 🙂
  2. Terrible call, but I'm not entirely sure there would've been a goal -- truth is that we will never know for sure. Neuer just makes too many mistakes for me; these games are hard enough without the goalie making such a blunder out of nothing. He was playing well until then, but that hardly matters now.
  3. Hmm it sure does (make sense), or are you suggesting that we cannot possibly know anything about the world prior to 1970 if there were no measurements for it then? because that's not the case at all. It's the same way that the Police can prove someone committed a crime even tho no-one else was present, thru evidence (forensics, DNA, etc). The page I linked calls it "Scientific evidence" but it's still evidence. They have been doing weather-related measurements since 1970, but the measurements can go back thousands of years (thru Geology, Archeology, and other fields). It's mentioned on the page. , "Ancient evidence can also be found in tree rings, ocean sediments, coral reefs, and layers of sedimentary rocks" You don't have to have been alive when the tree was young to know things about that time. "Trees contain some of nature's most accurate evidence of the past. Their growth layers, appearing as rings in the cross section of the tree trunk, record evidence of disastrous floods, insect attacks, lightning strikes, and even earthquakes that occurred during the lifespan of the tree. They also hold excellent records of climate." https://scied.ucar.edu/learning-zone/how-climate-works/tree-rings-and-climate
  4. Sure but that's how science works: the theory or even fact is only valid until new data proves otherwise, at which point it gets revised. Until then it remains the best understanding in the subject we have. I don't agree at all with what your take on experts and expertises, which are earned (certainly does not require academia much less a PhD): https://undsci.berkeley.edu/understanding-science-101/a-scientific-approach-to-life-a-science-toolkit/beware-of-false-balance-are-the-views-of-the-scientific-community-accurately-portrayed/ An expert body is ever more significant, because it's when a number of different experts on the subject matter reach similar conclusions. Which is what this piece I shared calls establish science: The solutions part is a different discussion and there is far less consensus around that, so I'd not put them in the same bucket.
  5. That's interesting... he was a bit iffy on D in the first match. Couldn't watch it/record it as the game was being held hostage by paramount+ PSG always have weaknesses in their team, which gets exploited in the CL. It's usually D, but haven't seen them enough this time around to know for sure.
  6. I honestly could not see PSG not going through in this tie; couldn't be happier for being totally wrong. 🙂 PSG needs to be looked at... it's getting comical.
  7. They lost me at "young". 😆 But fully agreed. Perhaps they are counting that Nkunku and Carney will remain fit and help to cover that side, but it's a lot of ifs. Carney fills the role of young left wing in my book, what we need is a consistent 25ish who will get us a 7 performance on every match.
  8. Regarding the CB discussion earlier, I really dislike PSG Marquinhos. I just don't see enough skill and mentality to make up for his lack of physicality. He's not a CB I would go for even if there was an opportunity.
  9. Diego Costa is a hero! Ex-Chelsea star uses his jeep to help rescue 100 people from devastating floods in Brazil as he springs into action on his way home from Gremio training session There is no training anymore because it's now all under water.
  10. https://science.nasa.gov/climate-change/evidence/ While Earth’s climate has changed throughout its history, the current warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10,000 years. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), "Since systematic scientific assessments began in the 1970s, the influence of human activity on the warming of the climate system has evolved from theory to established fact."1 Scientific information taken from natural sources (such as ice cores, rocks, and tree rings) and from modern equipment (like satellites and instruments) all show the signs of a changing climate. From global temperature rise to melting ice sheets, the evidence of a warming planet abounds.
  11. We do have TONS of evidence pointing to a man-made effect on climate. The natural process of converting carbon into fossil fuels takes millions of years, and all that accumulated energy is being released by us all at once (immediately in earth years). I do tend to trust the opinions of experts, and right now they are saying this action is having an effect. 🤷‍♂️ I agree with the second part tho; the proposed solutions so far are laughable at best. Perhaps some form of efficient carbon sequestration will become available soon?
  12. The assumption that because humans were not responsible on that particular occasion, they could not be responsible today makes no sense to me. The events may likely be completely unrelated; we have no evidence suggesting that they are similar, or the same event.
  13. OK, for the sake of argument, I'll concur that Serie A and PL are at the same level; I think CL alone proves otherwise, but I digress. So what? Fact remains that the dominant team in the PL plays in a particular way, which our current crop of players aren't really suited for. Now, you may think that's a detail, and that it may not be true 2-3 years from now, which is a possibility, but I am concerned that we may be going the wrong way.
  14. Is that what you see at City? do you see specialists doing their own thing, or very rounded players in all areas joining the attack at different times? Kante was unplayable in that CL run, but did that team win the league? Was it even close to winning the PL? City's system of total football has been proven very effective in the PL--less so in single-elimination games. The team closest to them right now uses the same system.
  15. heh I think fewer by the year. Never understood what was so mysterious about how we completely disrupt the carbon cycle... 🤷‍♂️ thought the hint was in the name, "fossil" fuels. I read that by now it's just too late, and impractical, to tackle the issue by reducing the carbon footprint. The solution will have to come from tech or we will just have to adapt to the new norm... perhaps both.
  16. Yeah saw that and the issue down in Porto Alegre is also man-made, more on the global scale. Southern Brazil was always the place where tropical and polar masses meet, but it's getting much worse with climate change. Meanwhile a historic draught in the Amazon forest https://eos.org/articles/almost-a-year-in-drought-in-the-amazon-is-far-from-over Capybaras are amazing! and there are so many in the meadows there. On the other hand, it's interesting in the first hours or so, it takes several hours in a straight line to get to the Uruguayan border, so the danger there is falling asleep at the wheel.
  17. I'm not sure Italy counts these days, no. They haven't even been able to quality for the WC ffs. Yes, I'm referring to the absence of such role (ball-winning dedicated mid) in the top clubs in modern football. Declan Rice moved up is just mirroring what Rodri does for City. I find that intriguing, but I don't claim to know the answer. It's something I consider. They tried to get rid of Partey who refused to leave last minute of the window. Rotation/backup player. Jorginho and Caicedo have absolutely nothing in common--and he's rotation/backup. Arenal is trying to mirror City and they are unsuccessful still. Maybe because they don't quite have the right players?
  18. That's how you see the situation, I get that. I don't share your view, but in an exercise of empathy, I can see the how it may look from each side; hence why I think it's nuanced. Israel may also think "leave me the fuck alone" which has never really happened in 70+ years. The point being, when you deal with different groups, countries, their world view matters even if you disagree/despise it. I personally see the world as a very unstable ecosystem. yeah there no lions or elephants in Brazil. In the most populated areas of Brazil one can see a monkey at the zoo and that's about it. you really have to go to very remote areas to see any form of diverse wildlife: midwest (pantanal) or NW (amazon). The city under water in the article is a 4-5m people region tho. Even the international airport is under water and shut down for the rest of the month. Only wildlife in the region is you drive south towards Uruguay and see capybaras all over.
  19. Yes, people do stupid shit when they are attacked. Countries do stupid shit when they are attacked. Some countries do stupid shit even when not being attacked and they even make up a reason to attack someone. Bottom line is don't attack anyone because you don't know how they will react; it may be unjustified in your view, but they may feel "justified" which will likely be enough to do [said stupid shit]. ----- On unrelated news from back home, https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/06/weather-tracker-torrential-rainstorms-cause-death-and-destruction-in-brazil
  20. ah good point! guy is likely a "defense magnet." 😁
  21. I agree with the notion were are nowhere near that, so need to focus on rebuilding. There is no choice. Mikel Obi is an interesting example tho: yes, his attacking numbers were close to zero, but his defense numbers weren't that great either. He rarely went to the ground to tackle, and was more like a dedicated short-range passer... a far more limited version of Kovacic (without the dribbling). To this day I'm not sure what he actually did on the pitch eh. I think he wasn't a sure started either -- more like a Rotation/often used off the bench player in our PL wins (he had left before last win with Conte in 16-17). I think Matic and even David Luiz in midfield were closer to a ball-winning mids tbh.
  22. Wow you went back a few years there buddy. Claiming football remains the same? where do you see makalele player lifting silverware? Because when I watch the top teams in the world their DMs are indeed exactly the player you mock above. 😆 isn’t Bellingham exactly what you describe? Isn’t Rodri more of what you describe? Isn’t Rice that also? His attacking numbers show exactly that. Why so quick to dismiss the possibility that the requirement to win the league again is indeed going for the positional play? Yes I wonder about it.
  23. They, the Palestine leaders, and whoever supports them are the biggest oppressors in the region but it’s not fashionable to talk about them. hamas knew exacrly what would happen after the attack. They were counting on it. its funny because i’d describe the Palestine leaders who want the extinction of Israel and all its people very much textbook racist genocidal tyrants. 🤷‍♂️
  24. yes, Gallagher is certainly the mid with most freedom esp when Enzo does not play. I just don't see Caicedo having the skillset needed to thrive when moving into these contested areas, it takes a different type of player more in the mould of Enzo. What he did at Brighton might have been important at the time we signed him--now I rather just take what I see from 31 appearances. My main concern is that the role in question, the deterrent as you call it (aka ball-winning mid), does not even exist in the team that wins the league every year.
  25. "Very good stats." that's not the discussion here. 🙂 I'm pointing out the skill side of his game, esp in attack, which was the *specific* point I was replying to.
