That can't be used as an excuse. Even without Kompany, Pellegrini still has some good defenders in his squad. Should be doing better and if he's really good, he would have ensured his team is defensively well drilled and competent at both ends of the pitch.
You speak as if the good/great managers don't go through some dodgy periods in their career. Mourinho, Fergie etc had them before and by the way, even Simeone experienced it during his time in Argentina. And I wouldn't necesarily say Allegri had a mediocre spell at Milan. Won the league title and did the best he could with the politics that go on at that club.
If it's between Conte and Allegri, I would pick the latter. Allegri is more versatile tactically and less intense than Conte, in the sense that he's cool headed and more calm.
