We've only missed him because everyone else got injured. It's all good Ballack saying he'd take a pay cut but what's the point in signing a 33 year old to a new contract? That's not thinking long term at all. At the time we could've potentially bought a player like Ozil, Khedira ect. Hell Yaya Touré would've been a good replacement. Torres is a worthy investment. He's 27 and proven world class. He's still at a ripe age as footballers go, so it's not exactly the same thing is it.

I don't agree. He was on the wrong side of 30, what was the point of extending a contract? We're not going to offer a 33-year old a contract when we're trying to keep our wage list & all this financial aspects down. It was a logical step to release players who were at the end of their contracts. We could've signed a suitable replacement for him. A younger, attacking, playmaker. We chose otherwise, such a shame..

Releasing Ballack was the right decision. Replacing him with Yossi Benayoun &/or Ramires was not.

Indeed. Heard everyone saying it but come on now. It's not ego, it's just how he's been used to playing. He's been the lone striker for 4/5 season for us and now things are changing. But he's never stopped creating & shooting. Today even he looked to link up with Torres and co. He was a bright spark today in all honesty, because he creates something out of nothing. Okay we moan when those somethings go wide or over. But he's only shooting because there's no movement from anyone else! The one thing people love about Hernandez (and rightly so) is he's never still. He'll always be moving around looking for space. Some player we don't have. Anelka, Kalou & Torres don't do that enough so what can Drogba do except try long-range shooting and hope to get lucky!

To be fair. He tested VDS both times. Don't really get the point of this thread though

They were on the offensive before us, and we never settled and that was at SB! The place we went 86 unbeaten, turned into their ground! Like you're saying, our players took all their years of experience and threw it out the window. Complacency cost us a lot.
