I would argue that at very least we should have depth even if Matic returns to form. Mikel is not depth we can count on if we say we're a "top club" that wants to contend for every trophy.

Guys, if Chelsea fail right now on this critical acquisition, then WTF does this say about the rest of the window and expectations for the season? I don't believe for second that Chelsea settle for buying the next Napalys Mendy or another player who merely has potential in PL in an effort to buy critical players for their wobbly CM. This will happen; the club surely sees failure here as a big WTF moment for the entire year and season --and critically for the new manager.

Definitely another CM with those you've listed. I think six or seven would be the magic number now: one CB, two FBs, two CMs, one striker (already signed). number seven would be another striker depending on Antonio. As it is, Matic, RLC and Fabregas are our CMs. Oscar is dubious, Mikel can't hack it. In this league adding only ONE more to that group just isn't enough to make top four IMO --unless we're planning to play more cautious football, take a goal and defend the whole match. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. More of that resoundingly dreadful global brand from Chelsea.

Thankfully, we don't have a numpty manager who wants to play the same boring football that presently defines a bunch of clubs and national sides. I wouldn't mind if Chelsea would refrain from signing this kind of player for a few years. A generation of Lionel Messi-wannabes who can't cut it or can't beat a defender at the top level, then make a good shot or final pass.
