Vesper, Ive been having this conversation with a couple of mates for awhile now. We are trying to wonder just what the next music fashion will be,

Thru time youth cultures have joined up a music style with its own fashion and its own drugs. Its all gone great while it was kept underground until the media, mainstream and bread heads got hold of it and turned it magnolia.

I just cant think whet the next new one will be or where it will come from.

I am 28 and I hang out a lot with people in early 20s and they all look the same to me. They listen the same music, do not really care about politics, they just take what mainstream media serve...

No critical thinking at all... Songs they listen are about whores, expensive cars, money...

About drugs? We dont need new things. We have everything we need :D

I hear ya. But here in England from like the 50s we have had youth cutures that have had ttheir ownn fashions, musuc, drugs.

Like in the 50s the beatniks had their dope and speed. Teddy Boys liked their speed. The hippies and their dope and hallucinogens. Mods and speed. Us Northern Soulies loved our speed. The Brit pop and rave culture took everything we could find. The rap scene seems to be just cannabis and Charly . Theres still the party scene with everything connected with that like the rave culture.

Each one had their own fashion.

I'm just at a loss as to whats next. It normally starts underground tho and seeing as my vinyl collections from the 60s/60s and I doubt I have 200 records later than 1980 it will pass me by lol

But its got to be street.. Was rewatching Clockwork Orange that got me thinking it actually. mixing Moloko plus with its synthemesc or drencrom and listening to classical music.

super long subject and I wil post some thought in depth later, but this is an area of intense interest to me too

I have already noticed a real breakage point with people born after 1996 (with a few exceptions)

I am was born at the end of the first first (Dec 1992) of a micro gen called the Zennials or Zillennials

some arguments over the boundaries, but I place it at 1992-1998, it is the transition from Millennials to Gen Z

I know a tonne of 18 to 22yos (from my uni) and they have had social media play a huge part in almost all (if not all) of their remotely interactive lives.

It really does change the way you look at the world, and thus how you approach or create art, fashion, and music aesthetics, even politics.

At 27, even I cannot fathom a non internet based world, but for the most part, until I was already 11,12,13, 14 social media was not the force it is now.

Hell in 2007 or 2008 it was not close to what it is now.

some key dates in social media (it all really kicked off in 2003, 2004) These came about because of the technological advancements collectively called  Web 2.0 (in 1999 the term Web 2.0 was coined by Darcy DiNucci. See the article here http://darcyd.com/fragmented_future.pdf )

Facebook launched in February 2004 (it was called TheFacebook back then, until late 2005 when it went to just Facebook, and opened up to all people, not just uni students, on September 26, 2006.)

Twitter (the very first Tweet ever was March 21, 2006, and Twitter was publicly launched July 15, 2006)

YouTube (launched April 23, 2005)

Whatsapp (first released January 2009, the main 2.0 version was launched in August, 2009)

reddit (launched late June, 2005)

Instagram (launched July 16, 2010),

Pinterest (launched March 15th, 2010)

Snapchat (launched as Picaboo on July 8, 2011, rebranded as Snapchat in September 2011)

Flickr (launched February 10, 2004)

XING (launched August 2003)

Tumblr (launched February 1st, 2007)

LinkedIn (launched May 5, 2003)

Skype (initial release 29 August 2003)

Viber (launched December 2, 2010)

Dischord (launched May 13, 2015)

WeChat (launched January 21, 2011)

TikTok (launched in China in September 2016, globally September 2017)

Google+ (launched July 2011)

Telegram (launched 14 August 2013)

Gab (launched on August 15, 2016)

Messenger, aka the old Facebook Chat, which was gradually released to users in April 2008. Facebook revamped its messaging platform in November 2010 and subsequently acquired group messaging service Beluga in March 2011, which the company used to launch its standalone mobile apps on August 9, 2011)

Friendster, (arguably the first one, in a modern sense, it launched in March 2003, was the first Web 2.0 social media service to 1 million users)

hi5 (launched in June 2003)

MySpace (launched in August 2003)

Vine (closed, grrr, I loved it) Initial release: January 24, 2013, shut down January 17, 2017 (3 days before Trump was sworn in as US president)

I am not counting earlier Web 1.0 sites like SixDegrees (launched May 1, 1997, closed Jan 1, 2001, lol, the typical dotcom mania story, the founder Andrew Weinreich, sold it in December 1999 for 125m USD, and 12 months later or so, it was out of business) and Makeoutclub (launched August 1st, 1999, permanently closed January 1, 2017) GeoCities (launched November 1994) Classmates (launched in December 1995) and SixDegrees in May 1997. SixDegrees is "widely considered to be the very first social networking site", as it included "profiles, friends lists and school affiliations" that could be used by registered users.. Open Diary was launched in October 1998; LiveJournal (launched in April 1999; and  finally Ryze (launched for business users in October 2001) btw, as they lacked key elements of the 2.0 sites/networks when they launched (for example SixDegrees had to have uses scan in their profile pics).

Side note: My 7th birthday party in December 1999 turned into a huge fight between my father, my mum, and several of my friends' parents (all involved were bankers) over the dotcom bubble, lolol. Fucking two of them left with my friends before the cake was even served. That (and the subject, and the consequent crash that proved my parents correct when they said the dotcom boosters were going to lose their arse in the next 4 to 6 months,) had a big influence on me in my life. It still is the stuff of legend in my family, roflmaooooooooo, They call it the dotcom crash b-day party. (my parents eventually made up with the ones who left, but it took years)

Yes mate. Get all that. Podcasts, blogs etc has made it possible for talentless people to become rich and famous. And as I told you Youtube podcasts kept my head straight as well as taught me such a lot lately.

But I dont see any physical communication, congregating, new music or fashions happening. Its all about me me me.
