Honestly, god knows what was really happening at Balkan during the II world war and since those who win usually write history I don't believe it that much.But basically, communist soldiers led by Josip Broz Tito all had a red star on their berets and there is a red star even on the Yugoslavian flag so as Only Blue said, it was a very common and widely spread symbol.
