Salomon Kalou is set to become an unlikely beneficiary of Chelsea'stransfer ban, with the Ivory Coast striker close to agreeing a newcontract.

The 23-year-old's deal expires at the end of the season, but theclub have made an improved offer in recent days and his signature isimminent.

Chelsea were keen to retain Kalou's services in any case, but theprospect of being unable to sign any new players for two transferwindows has increased the need to tie their existing squad to long-termcontracts.

The club are planning to appeal against Fifa's decision over theirbehaviour surrounding the transfer of Gaël Kakuta from Lens at theCourt of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, but if the ban is upheld,they will not even be able to recall players players on season-longloans, so keeping Carlo Ancelotti's present squad together is crucial.

John Terry, Ashley Cole, Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, FlorentMalouda and John Obi Mikel signed long-term contracts last summer, withKalou set to follow suit after proving himself to Ancelotti. The formerFeyenoord striker has been offered a new four-year deal worth £60,000 aweek, which, although modest by Chelsea's standards, is almost doublethe value of his present contract and deemed acceptable by his advisers.

Kalou's inconsistency is a source of considerable frustration toChelsea fans, but he is a popular member of the squad and has scored inalmost one third of the 62 Premier League matches he has started.

It will be the first contract renegotiation conducted by RonGourlay, the new chief executive, but it will not be the last asChelsea seek to ward off potential predators. Joe Cole has also beenoffered a new four-year deal, while Chelsea may reconsider theirprevious refusal to open talks with Nicolas Anelka. The France strikerhas 18 months remaining on his contract, but his form has been soimpressive this season that the club may not want to risk losing him.

Florent Malouda said yesterday that the club's home form will be thekey to their title hopes. Chelsea won only 11 of their 19 home matcheslast season, but Sunday's 2-0 win against Liverpool maintained a 100per cent record at Stamford Bridge this time around.

"It's important to win points at home, which is where I think welost the title in past years," Malouda said. "We must win every game athome and we're happy because it was a big game against Liverpool.

"The reaction was good after we lost away at Wigan. Now we are ontop of the league. There was a good result when Manchester United drewand we had to take advantage of this by winning at home."

Malouda conceded that Chelsea have not always produced their bestfootball this season, but said they are happy to win ugly if necessary."We're not trying to please everybody," he said. "It was better tostruggle a bit and win the games. You have to win some games indifficulty, and sometimes you have to win games when it doesn't lookgood. If we keep on winning then we have confidence for games in thefuture."

Don't post that idea, they may see it!

I don't think it will make a blind bit of difference, they've probably made up their minds already. They just want to make an example of us. We are strong and I believe we will get through this.

Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou has revealed that he has signed a new four-year contract that should see him stay at Stamford Bridge until at least 2014.

The23-year-old's current contract was due to expire at the end of thisseason, although with the Blues facing up to their transfer embargo,the club have apparently moved to secure the player's future.

The deal is reportedly worth £60,000 a week and will end speculation linking the forward with moves to Roma and Arsenal.

The player was pleased to have signed the deal he claims is in place, telling The People: "Signing this deal with Chelsea has freed my mind to concentrate on football."

Kalou is here to stay so everyone should get behind him and support him...

Yes agree we should support him and think he's got a lot of potential. I just can't get out of my head,

He Comes From the Ivory Coast Kalou, Kalou,

He don't do coke like Adrian Mutu, Mutu,

He crossed the ball from the left,

It landed gight on Rises head

That's why we love Salomon Kalou
