The Times says Chelsea’s interest in AC Milan ace Andrea Pirlo is a surprise given the number of talented central midfield players in the squad, but Ancelotti believes he will add something different. The manager is committed to playing a diamond formation this season and wants midfield players who can fulfil a variety of roles, with Pirlo’s passing ability meaning he is comfortable at the base or the tip of the midfield diamond. Ancelotti has reservations about John Obi Mikel’s passing ability and fears that Michael Essien may lack the positional discipline needed to play in the holding role, hence his desire to add depth to the squad. If these two players aren't on the field for the majority of the season I'm going to be very very shitty. Essien lacks the positional discipline? God these British newspapers are killing me. But I would rather see Essien used in a more forward role. Not sure how it would work in this diamond shape though. If Pirlo comes he along with Frank would be first choice I assume. Essien came back like gangbusters, and also played WB a few times when needed. Essien can truly do it all(minus GK)! If Carlo is concerned about ACN, he is well within his rights to look at bringing someone in for when they are gone, and it ain't like having Pirlo on the squad is gonna suck...
