They're not bastards at all, it is sheer propaganda which bastardised the Templars. In 1305, Clement V was elected Pope; the first in a line of French-born Vicars of God. He created the Great Schism, which saw the curia moved from the Vatican to France, which is known as the creation of the Avingon Papacy. This new Pope had established links with the French monarchy in order to gain the Papal Throne, but King Philip IV had established himself as one of the great European leaders of the early 12th Century by his close friendship with the Mongol Il-khanate established in modern-day Iraq - in fact he was second only to the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry VII. He was able to manipulate the Papacy and in 1307 he oversaw the Templar purge. The Templars' monetary prowess and expertise in the field of banking is well-documented, and because of his wars with the English, Philip was in steep debt with the military order. In order to free himself from the debts (he had bankrupted the French coffers in this war with the English) he pressed the Church to come up with a way of bastardising the Templars. Froday 13th October, 1307 will forever be known as one of the great betrayals in human history - the Templars were accused of sorcery, heresy, murder, homosexuality, union with the Devil, and forced to confess to these sins under duress; namely torture. Most were flayed and burned alive. Their vast fortune was seized by the French monarchy. After years of pressure, the Pope finally succumbed to Philip's demands to officially dissolve the Order and he did so in 1312. The French King seized all the Templar land acquisitions and their wealth.
