No More Abramovich Cash

It has now been revealed that Chelsea intend to be self-funding on an annual basis from next July and no longer reliant on interest-free loans from their billionaire owner.

The Russian oligarch has ploughed almost £600 million into the club since June 2003, but despite the bleak global economic environment, chief executive Peter Kenyon believes they can cut costs and raise revenues enough so that there is no new funding requirement from Abramovich after the current financial year.

Chelsea would then hope to break even in terms of their operating figure by 2010-11.

Telegraph.

Other media sources cite there is no cash available for January -but how reliable remains to be seen....

No cash no problem . Just use our academy talent

Easier said than done.

Any Club needs a bit of a cash boost to freshen up the squad every year. If we resort to selling our assets to buy other players we wont be challenging for top honours on a yearly basis imo. I think we're quite a few years off from being fully self sufficient.

I for one wouldnt mind taking a step backwards to involve more of the youth players if it meant in the long term we'd be better off for it.

One problem we have is that we have a squad with a lot of players who are getting on a bit age wise. Carvalho, Lampard, Ballack, Deco, Drogba all will need replacing in a couple of years. If we were going to use our youngsters to replace them then they should be in the first team squad now! So we are going to have to dig deep for some big players sooner rather than later.

Who knows what our spending policy in going to be in the fututre? January - wil there be any decent players available anyway? I think there will be a lot of activity in the summer though.
