It's good that Kepa is making saves that he wasn't before but we're seemingly entering the territory of overpraising him for doing the things that a keeper should be doing, especially when he's the most expensive one around.

It's so odd and quite infuriating how the unperforming expensive players get molly coddled to such an extent. Yet by comparision Mendy has his first true disaster game a season and a half in and there's instant talk of replacing him with Kepa.

It was the same with Torres vs Sturridge, Eto'o, Ba etc, the cheaper they are the higher the standards they get held too, it's ridiculous.

Am just bemused by yesterday's reaction. The saves he made are those you expect any decent keeper to make. None of them were particularly hard to save. He had made better/more difficult saves in the other games this season.

Great. Did Chelsea at least make an attempt to keep Mendy

I'd expect this to affect all notable players that have been called up. Another plus is Ziyech not being called up.

His last performance against Zenit was one worthy of praise, despite us still letting in 3.

I read more of an indication of just how bad he got. As you say, all saves you would expect him to make, however as the bar went so low, now regulation saves are praised. What was also lost was how he still doesn't have any presence when balls come in high.

That said, at least he is making saves he should do. That is a big improvement on what went before.

It is not really just expected saves. 6.1 goals prevented from expected comparing to 8.9 extra conceded from expected in 19/20 season. So he prevented 6 goals in just 5 games. Not to mention 3 penalty series.

This 80% saves would actually be way over 90% if defense did not let him down big time in Russia.

Doesn't this just reiterates the point I'm making or @King Kante is making?

People are overpraising Kepa now because he was a total disaster previously. It's good that he's making saves now but at the same time, he's also making saves that a decent keeper should be making.

The 80% save percentage and 6.1 goals prevented are the kind of stats that a good keeper should have (although that 80% save rate may not be sustainable/may be higher than the average number), perhaps even more so with Kepa when you consider he's the most expensive keeper. Am sure the keepers at other big clubs would also have a similar goals prevented stat.

And to touch on the point @Tomo made, Mendy has a save rate of 82% and approximately prevented 6.4 goals in all competitions this season and yet doesn't seem to get overly praised or praised much at all (why?) and you have people wanting him out after a bad game.

Problem with this is sample sets. 2019/20 covers a lot more games and better opponents to 2021/22 Kepa. That invalidates the comparison quite significantly. It is similar to how people used Lukaku's Serie A stats to try and convince people he was a better player than the one that left Utd or how people used to use Batsh*t's stats in his first few seasons on a minute to goal ratio.

I'd also be interested in seeing how his shot prevention has been spread as due to the sample size it would be interesting to see if it is skewed by 1 or 2 games or is fairly equal.
