Aston Villa plot shock bid for Joe Cole

Aston Villa are looking at an audacious £17.5million bid to lure Joe Cole from Chelsea.

Martin O'Neill's staff have put the 26-year-old England star on their radar if Chelsea manage to prise Robinho away from Real Madrid.

They suspect Cole, who has just two years left on his Stamford Bridge contract and has yet to have serious talks on a new one, could then be surplus to requirements.

Villa could then offer him a way out to play regular football and protect his place in Fabio Capello's England squad.

Cole has suffered from Chelsea's massive squad, playing 90 minutes of a Premier League game only 12 times last season, and the arrival of the Brazilian as well as Portuguese star Deco would be a massive blow to him.

Villa still want a marquee signing as a sign of their intent to challenge the top four, and are now the only club outside the current Champions League cartel with the cash to attract such a big name.

Billionaire owner Randy Lerner has made it clear he'll back O'Neill in the market whether or not Gareth Barry's sale to Liverpool goes through.

O'Neill is still chasing Valencia's Portuguese international Miguel despite completing deals for Luke Young and Nicky Shorey last week.

He's also in the hunt for Tottenham's French defender Younes Kaboul if Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp can't raise the cash by selling David Nugent to Ipswich.

He played more than anyone else last season.

Five year deal???

Is this a joke? did the mirror seriously print this?

Move it to the joke thread :P

Harry Redknapp is plotting to team up with Joe Cole again.

Redknapp nurtured the Chelsea and England midfielder as he rose through the ranks at West Ham.

Now he wants to pair up again by luring Cole to Tottenham.

Redknapp is desperate for a left-sided midfielder and will use guaranteed first-team football in a World Cup season as his bait to land the 27-year-old.

People Sport understands Cole, who has one year left to run on his £80,000-aweek contract, is happy at Chelsea and that the Blues do not want him to leave.

But a guaranteed starting berth will give him food for thought.

Redknapp has turned his attentions to Cole after failing to land Stewart Downing in January.

Spurs and the player were keen on the move but Middlesbrough held firm, causing Redknapp to switch his sights to his old mate.

The Tottenham boss also wants to sign Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry, but a switch to Arsenal or Manchester City remains more likely.

But if Redknapp were to land Barry, it would almost certainly spell the end at White Hart Lane for Jermaine Jenas

depends where ancelotti wants to play him, because theres no way he will let him play a central role, he'd rather push for the ribery deal or hold on to the possibility of kaka'

and malouda wont be ignored after his great season with hiddink.
