Marcos Alonso

We have 5 clean sheets this season and 4 of them came with him in the squad. He's not that much bad defensively comparing to Emerson.
He fouled someone in the penalty box and we were lucky that the ref did not give Spurs the pen. He is just not good enough

His goals and assists aside, Alonso's stats aren't very different from Emerson's.

But if the first choice gets injured and Alonso suddenly becomes temporary first choice...? Between Alonso and Emerson, I'd rather keep the latter. Has more years left in him than Alonso. Besides, we need competition and Alonso isn't going to provide it.

If we want proper competition at left back then we have to get rid of both and sign two new players as neither do or ever will cut it playing regularly.

That'll likely be the case but I doubt we'll sign 2 new LBs at the same time. We'll likely sign one next summer and then another one in 2021. But between the two to choose as back-up, I'll take Emerson. Younger than Alonso, which means he potentially has room to get better (we don't need a snail in the team!) and is on lower wages than Alonso (I think).

Even in a back four he can still be useful against the fodder who barely bother to attack, he was good against Brighton and the difference against Newcastle.

However he shouldn't be playing (in a four) against top teams agreed.

I agree with you, his also our most clinical player, and that Emerson chance against Bournemouth would have been buried if it was him, at this point in time I would rather have Alonso at the back than Azpi playing LB, it totally kills us when we have a right footed full back.

It is amazing how biased people can be, For instance, in our match against spurs, Alonso was clearly one of our best players and still there were people in the forum posting how bad he is. I don't mind the bashing since the guy pisses me off more often than not, but when he is playing good, the least you can do is acknowledge it instead of moaning for no reason.

I agree. On Whoscored after Willian 9.2 Alonso was our best rated player with 7.8.

I kinda agree that for backup Emerson is the better choice. Not because of he will provide competition but because he is just ok at everything hence it is easier to use him as backup.

But if our new lb is not a nailed down starter material, I much rather have Alonso. With Alonso you need to compensate but at least with Alonso you get contribution offensively. Now that Emerson has played regularly, I can safely say that it is not even close.

Really? Think it is well established by now that Alonso is useless in a back 4 and if we want to get more out of him, we basically need to switch to a back 3/5. Otherwise, we would basically be playing with fire in hoping the "good" Alonso turns up. It's amusing some people bash Azpi for his poor offensive play and yet are somehow okay with Alonso who is so SLOW and immobile for a modern full back. Stats don't obviously tell the whole story but here's a comparison between Alonso and Emerson (and Chilwell for good measure).

Also, Alonso turns 29 on Dec 28 and is on big wages. If we can get it off the books to open space for others, then all the better.

You don't have to play back 5,if you play a good defensive winger as lw and have a very good defensive right back. So Alonso can play almost like a wb. That what I mean by compensate. Or if you play opp that have very little threat from their rw.

With Emerson you don't need to compensate but he offer very little in both.

Your Stat is pretty much on team Alonso. He has same goal and assist as Chilwell with half of his minute. I don't even need to look at stat to compare Alonso vs Emerson. It is pretty clear this season.
