Vicente Del Bosque explains why he left out Diego Costa from Spain's Euro 2016 squad

Quote

Just last week, Vicente Del Bosque was singing Diego Costa's praises, leaping to the oft-controversial striker's defense and saying things like "he committed no crime" and "we value his desire" and "not going to doubt him because of his behavior".  So when the provisional Spanish squad was named this morning and the Chelsea striker's name was NOT on the list, eyebrows were duly raised.

But Del Bosque's comments came before Chelsea's last two matches, before Diego picking up yet another hamstring injury (that sort of flew under the radar), and before Guus Hiddink hinting that said injury might be a bit more serious than previously thought.  And so, sure enough, despite the glowing words from the national team boss, Diego will miss out on Euro 2016 due to injury.  (Same thing goes for Arsenal's Santi Cazorla.)

"We've evaluated the situation and we didn't want to have an overload of players who were in an uncertain situation [regarding their physical condition]; we preferred not to bring them."

-Vicente Del Bosque; source: UEFA

Death, taxes, and Diego Costa's hamstrings being jerks.  The timing of the injury is especially cruel considering that Diego has managed to stay healthy pretty much all season, unlike last season and the season before when the hamstrings were a constant cause for concern.

If we sell Costa now, we're bigger idiots than I thought. No doubt, on form, he's one the most clinical strikers in the league. If we can keep him fit and healthy for the entirety of the 2016-17 season then we have a true shot at the title. With an inform Hazard, Fabregas, Costa, Willian we can replicate the early 2014-15 form where we dominated the league.

Of course we have to replace the useless Pato, Falcao & Remy but unless someone like Lewandowski suddenly decides he wants Chelsea and no European competition  then Costa should be our #1 striker.

If he wants to leave we shouldn't sell for less than £40m

DC19 Rumors of departure:"We don't know if he is leaving, but for us it would be a huge loss!

The future of Diego Costa at Chelsea is up for debate and will remain so right up to the end of the transfer window a month or so into the new season. With reports that Diego Simeone has demanded his signature for Atletico, we sit and wait to see what is going to happen. With Chelsea's difficult year putting an end to a run of qualifying for the Champions League every year to bed and now we face a year without any form of European competition. With the prestige the tournament has, it has become the place that all the big names what to be involved. With the likes of Atletico waiting in the wings it's clear that Chelsea and Antonio Conte would do well to hold onto him.We all love Diego Costa when he is on form and scoring goals. Yes he has had his troubles over here and suffered a massive dip in form as with everyone else last season but, he stuck to it, took on board the advice of Guus Hiddink to not get involved with the ball out wide, to focus on his job and he really kicked on in the second half of the season and scored goals on a regular basis.I have said it before, the fact that he hasn't learnt the language here worries me. It's been two years and he still cannot speak English or refuses to do so in public. You can only put that down to not settling into life in London. Of course I am purely speculating but I am doing that because I can really see him going back to La Liga if Atletico or one of the other big clubs comes in for him. Back home to La Liga where he has felt his most comfortable and to a side in the Champions League next year.

Pedro has spoken out of the Costa rumours and he believes it would be a massive loss if he was to leave. He said:"We don't know [if he is leaving], but for us it would be a huge loss. We want him to stay and we are going to see what happens with him."

It doesn't look good does it despite reports that Antonio Conte has met with him on more than one occasion in recent weeks.Diego Costa was left out of the Spanish squad for the Euro 2016 competition starting this week and that would have been a blow to him. I just wonder if he thinks that he needs to go back to La Liga to get back into contention. If Chelsea are going to force their way back into the top four then we need to hold onto our best players. Diego Costa without question is one of those players! What do you think?

One of the demands Simeone made to executive Gil Marín when he agreed to stay at the club was to bring Costa back. (AS) #CFC #Atletico

#Atletico executive Gil Marin is going to do whatever possible, and even impossible, to try & satisfy Simeone's request for Costa. (AS) #CFC

Gil Marin is ready to bring back Costa, and he's got the €42m he got from the sale of Jackson Martínez just ready to do the deal. (AS) #CFC

42m is a decent sum for Costa but the problem is that no one will sell us a player of his calibre for 42m. These Spanish and Italian teams are sending bench players for that price to the premier league teams. We should not sell unless we get that much money in pounds, which will still not be enough imo to get a similar class player.

That is the problem. Better keep what you have if you can't guarantee getting better or similar quality for the same money

If we can replace him with Morata or Higuain, then I'm for it. They wouldn't cost much more anyway than the quoted sum for Costa.

It wouldn't be bad. But honestly I think we should add to costa because we need two strikers in our team. Having costa as the only good finisher in our starting lineup is a bigger problem than people think.
