What was the thinking behind the variety of colours?

It represents England today, and England today is a more diverse place than ever before. The team is diverse with players coming from all backgrounds. Modern England is inclusive and this is an idea that can transcend the shirt and be employed by other people doing other things. It's an expansive idea.
