CHOULO19 24,332
I agree with @Special Juan, this was not the game to start him. If Jose wants to give him minutes then let him come off the bench in games like this and start him against Hull and Swindon. This game won't do much good to his confidence, I'm afraid, or the manager's confidence in him. Only positive was his passing which was excellent, to be fair. But of course we all have the gift of hind-sight and I could totally see why Jose started him before the game. Special Juan

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him so I'm not entirely sure what his character is like, but you're saying that he's one of those guys who goes into his shell after making a few mistakes rather than working harder in training the next day and coming back stronger? Is that what you're saying? If you've played any kind of sport, you'd have experienced that first hand. He's 20 years old, and his first start for the club, which coincided with his CL debut is a HUGE deal for him. The fact that he did badly will no doubt have a negative effect on his confidence. How he deals with that is an entirely different, character-based, story.Quit trying to pick a fight with your shadow. bushman

So you don't know what type of effect it will have on him?Again, I'm not picking a fight but I'd hate for someone to read your post about a player's mentality and assume you had some kind of insight or knowledge about them. The man could've been at Cobham an hour before everyone else looking at the game tape and picking up things to put into his next performance. I don't know - but neither do you.
bushman 2,043
Once again,a constant opposition view is seen here by the one & only expert. To see Marco on the pitch, it does a hell of a good for him. Despite of it, I still think, he is not ready for Chelsea.
meetdoscar 335
I thought he did ok defensively as that was where he played. He was aggressive defensively which is good. I know he will come good because he has the talent. I think his stay is best because mou has specific plans for him, sending him on loan could change the type of player mourinho wants him to be. We were lucky that we had one of the most lenient refs in Europe yesterday because he made 3-4 bookable challenges and the one he was actually booked for I've seen players sent off for because his studs were up. A few of his tackles were a bit over-enthusiastic but he worked his bollocks off and will hopefully take something from this game. Looking forward to seeing him progress under Jose because he plays in an area we're in dire need of numbers.

I agree. I like his aggressiveness, something he has that our other midfielders don't have, but of course there's a thing as too much, very over eager in the tackle which was probably due to inexperience. 2-3 times he lost the ball due to a rubbish touch and then just fouled the player that took the ball. I'd have preferred him to just take a good touch and not lose the ball in the first place. Barbara

Phil Driver 503
You cant judge him on that ,he looked raw ,not surprising though but it was clearly too much for him last night . Massive statement though to be picked in front of Mikel for such a big game ,but Rammy must come back in that role and let Lampard score the goals and make those key passes like for the goal last night. The_Flash 1,144
Yes it was one game, but it was a very important game, and he was very weak, hardly heard his name, he looked confused, out of his depth, and when you look at say Ryan how he came on and was really good at such a high level was brilliant. He has to do better.

Is it really a "massive statement"? He had not started any games for us before and although we were aware of the the threat they can pose I think Jose thought this would be a match to bring him in. At home, likely to have more off the ball and a game where he believed he MVG would settle better into the team but it did not really work. I still think, currently that Mourinho does not think MVG is 100% ready and I would expect Mikel to play more than him for now anyway. Jase 43,479
I remember someone said last season that it isn't the best for a young player making his debut playing alongside Luiz in the pivot. The same probably applies with him and Lampard yesterday. Was left alone and exposed whenever Basel broke forward in that midfield with Lampard ghosting so far forward and not there to help him protect the back 4. Phil Driver 503
Lampard was often behind him in the first half ,they rotated especially early on . But then of course we needed somebody who could produce a pass that could make a goal and we went in 1-0 up. He did not sit as in virtually stand still as Mikel does. And I do not think Jose wants that as even Mikel was higher up the pitch v Everton. I think the days of this sitter have gone.
lucio 5,418
he successfully completed 96.3% of his passes so thats promising. just a bit nervy. needs to play with rammy
Phil Driver 503
If Mikel had those stats everybody would have said Man of Match . 96% just shows how easy it is to have a high % pass rate when you keep it simple.

Phil Driver 503
What was it for then letting Osman waltz past him unchalleneged for the goal or the hat trick?
