I sat on a table in the company of some Irish and there was an embassy attache with them.
The Irish wanted to sell horses to Greek owners.
It was world cup days and some of the tv screens were broadcasting football from Germany.
Our attention was drawn to the tv screens showing the race horses of course but from somewhere I heard the announcement England had scored against Equador.
So I says "wow, nice, England one up".
The embassy man became rather uncourteous "shame on you" he says "you support the scum".

The weirdest thing about visiting Europe was seeing that other Europeans dont really like the English that much.

 

I mean coming from America, who fought two wars against them, England is pretty loved here.  We love their stars, their tv(although repackaged as ours), their royal family. I remember back in the 00's that even having a "posh" accent was enough for women to sleep with you. It holds cache over here for sure.

The royal family is half Greek first of all.
But these days they can do nothing.
The Tories would go about with their heads tucked underneath their arm for starters.

They are just about half German too, but to us they simple just represent the English exoticism that was en vogue in America for large parts of the 20th century.

 

I dont think the average person in America could find Greece on a map😂

Lived in Long Beach for a while and visited a club one night, the Red Onion (where OJ Simpson picked up a waitress that he later married and murdered, allegedly). Anyway I was pissed (inebriated not angry) and the doormen just werent letting me in.....then ''hey you're English ? Come in my man''

Similar scenario here Americans are seen as cool - though people are people at the end of the day regardless of which bit of land they come from. Though its funny, if you really want to upset a Canadian -ask them where in the US are you from ? They go ballistic

There are stories in the right wing media of surveys whereby the record homelessness in some States needs to 'be solved' by forcibly moving them out of cities into wilderness and desert tent cities.

I feel very strongly about this one as I actually live downtown.

Yes, people should be taken care of, some even belong in some institution given their mental health. The better solutions involve something in the city.
One thing that is plainly obvious to me is that you can't lose the city... period. SF downtown business are in trouble because of that--many stores closing (small and big). This is really not about ethnicity: in certain regions of the US most homeless people are white. Yes, poverty and ethnicity are linked in most regions, but I think that's a different problem and a much harder to solve one. Lack of a public option health insurance in the US is key here as well.

I just don't see how letting tents, shit and garbage, proliferate everywhere helps anyone. Eventually, like it's happening in SF, the business will close down and even the homeless people living there will end up isolated.
