We had the misfortune of being in the Europa League twice but won it on both occasions. There really is no excuse for not going all the way in this tournament and becoming the first side to win all three continental titles (currently active).

Chelsea ‘can’t relax’ in UEFA Conference League, Malo Gusto insists

Malo Gusto has warned his Chelsea team-mates that they cannot take their place in the UEFA Conference League this season for granted.

Chelsea have to play a two-legged qualifier (August 22 and 29) later this month to book their spot in the league phase of the competition.

They will be seeded in the draw which takes place on Monday, which means the club should get an easier tie against one of Europe’s minnows.

Chelsea are already among the main favourites to lift the trophy next year, but Gusto believes that will just make their opponents want to beat them even more.

Gusto said: “We can’t relax. We have to be ready for that because it is still a European cup (trophy). We have to keep pushing, to improve and win every game.

“The pressure at Chelsea is (on us) every time (we play). We have to play and just play like normal, to build something between us and show our best on the pitch. And I think we are going to do that.”

Chelsea initially qualified for the Europa League after finishing sixth in the Premier League last May, but dropped down to UEFA’s third tier tournament after Manchester United won the FA Cup.

This will be the second time Gusto, who was bought by Chelsea from Lyon for €30million in January 2023, has played in Europe having reached the Europa League quarter finals with Lyon in 2022.

Chelsea had already booked a spot in the 2022-23 Champions League knock-out stages when Gusto agreed to leave Lyon, but they have not qualified for it since.

Gusto is concentrating on the positives and regards the UEFA Conference League as a great opportunity for the club.

He said: “It is better than nothing but we have to take it step by step. We are young. The Conference League can be nice for us to know how (playing for a) European cup is. Then it is going to be nice because we have a good group with a lot of players and more matches this season. It is going to be nice to build something and put Chelsea where we have to be.

“Is this a chance to make good memories? Of course. We have to win something this season, it is very important. That is the objective. The Conference League, even the Premier League, or the cups. It is important to win trophies. To become better, it is important to the group.”

He scored yesterday in FC Porto 3 - 0 win.
