Beast 85
Hello TalkChelsea, I'm here to help people with their grammar and what they can do to improve it. Let's start with the basics. You always start with your sentence with a capital letter, no matter what the word is. Other words that should start with a capital letter that aren't at the beginning of the sentence are important words like the name of a person, place, city, month, day, holiday, etc..Example:A: I really don't like Salomon Kalou.B: Who's* Salomon Kalou?A: The Footballer who plays for Chelsea.*Who's becomes 'Who is', so you don't use the word 'Whose'.Many people get confused by this, so I will try to explain it as best as I can. When you use an apostrophe in a word like It's, that apostrophe is replacing a letter, and in this case It's replacing an I. So if you replace the apostrophe with an I, it becomes 'It is'. Its basically means 'belonging to'.Example of using 'It's'.It's really frustrating to see Torres playing like Emile Heskey.Example of using 'Its'The dog is burying Its bone in the backyard.Vowels: A, E, I, O, U. (An)Consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. (A)You only use the word 'an' before a word that begins with a vowel. You never use an before a word that begins with a consonant.Example: (Vowel)My friend is an Accountant.Example: (Consonant)My friend is a Miner.Try not to use 'but' or 'and' at the beginning of the sentence.Example: But I am still waiting for her reply.Replace 'But' with However, Although or Nevertheless.Example: And he was running very fast.Replace 'And' with Moreover, In addition or Furthermore. Two small tips. When you write i in a sentence, it becomes capital I, not small i, and 'a lot' is two words, not one.Example: Even though I hate Manchester United, Wayne Rooney is still a great Footballer.Example: I hate Manchester United a lot. That's all I've got now, I'll add more information once I know what to write about. Hope you learned a few things.- Beast.
BlueLion. 21,491
It is so lovely of you to spend your time explaining the basics of the English language. However, if you're going to promote yourself as a Grammar Nazi, you're putting a target on your forehead that screams 'arrogant bastard.' Just saying. This is an internet forum, and people here will not necessarily take the time to write in word-perfect English. Plus there's the fact that a third of the members on here don't have English as their first language, and, as such, their best efforts are to be commended. And, in regards to said target-on-the-forehead, you'll most definitely be hunted down should you make even the most minuscule of errors, because people really don't like a smart-arse.You might want to check what you're preaching though, because you use the indefinite article 'an' before a vowel sound, not just before an actual vowel. You don't say 'a hour,' 'a honour,' or 'a historic event,' do you? Again, just saying.Yours sincerely,Alex,Representing those of us with adequate grammar. BlueLion. 21,491
I'm not saying you are, but people will think that way. Maybe be a little less forceful in your opening sentence, because it infers anyone who can't string a decent sentence together is a moron. Even our American friendshave at least a working knowledge of English. One final point ...If we do need to have an English primer must it be yet another cheap dig at Kalou's expense. It was a joke and to be honest I've only just clocked on who it is as you've had your username changed. Didn't mean to cause you any offense or distress...Apologies.
