Guys, the fee with Basel has already been agreed. It cannot be changed. The only thing that can prevent this deal from going through is Salah not agreeing personal terms or failing the medical. But the club must be pretty sure that he wants to come here or they would not have made an announcement about it and Jose would not have said that he personally told him that he wants to come here. You kinda missed my point: Mata does not have certain qualities such as physical strength and pace to play as an AM in Jose's system. He can improve on certain stuff in his game, but he will never be Willian or Oscar. JT does not have the pace to play in AVB's high-line as another example. He can improve his positioning, but he will never be David Luiz. So, what does Luiz lack that he does not fit Jose's system? Cahill being more dependable than Luiz is only related to their current form which can change 180 degrees in a matter of weeks. In the second half of last season, David was one of our key men and our star defender while Cahill was inconsistent and error prone. I think we can turn that down because, unlike the Mata situation where we are loaded with AMs, we are currently looking to bring one more CB in, not get rid of one. The reason we agreed to sell Juan was not only because the offer was good, but also because we did not really need him. But we need Luiz, imo.

Firstly, Luiz is a CB, not a defensive midfielder. Secondly, his unreliability just means that he is out of form, it does not mean that he can't play the system and be a starter. And thirdly, it is an absolute myth that Jose only like English no-none sense defenders as I'm sure the likes of Carvalho and Ramos would tell you.

This is a football club, not the "Make a wish" foundation. The purpose is to win football matches, not put a smile on the faces of certain individuals and we've been doing just that.

Genuine serious question: how does David Luiz not fit Jose's system? I mean, i get that Mata didn't have the physical attributes and wasn't nearly comfortable enough with his back to goal to play the number ten role in Jose's system and that he lacked the pace and stamina to play on the wings. But what exactly does Luiz lack to play the CB role in Jose's system or how does his style conflict with this system? Till now, the claims that Luiz does not fit Jose's system are baseless because no one, to my knowledge, has given a convincing reason why.

I don't think you can switch numbers in mid season unless you're suggesting we keep the number 10 free till the summer? But like you said, Jose never cared about shirt numbers.

In fact, it is because that we have respect for our best players that we've allowed him to leave instead of keeping him on the bench till an offer from a foreign team comes in.
